GP's 2005 SERCA Pics And Commentary Thread (56k, go cry to your momma')

Hey, gang--

Just got home late on Sunday night from the SERCA Convention. I've put up only about 15 photos of the almost 400 that I shot in Texas. Figured some commentary would be good with the photos, so here goes.

Geo gave us the night-before sermon about how to behave during the track day at Texas World Speedway. Here, Geo was obviously begging us to act like humans. Which we did. Geo always gives a good speech.

Our Fearless Leader, Matt Hunt, did his best to pay attention to Geo's pre-game speech at the hotel. Matt broke his track cherry the next day, driving the Jaguar on track, his only track experience thus far in his SR20 career. Maybe one day he will actually drive a SR20-powered car in anger, like the rest of us did. Maybe not.

After being labeled an "instructor", I needed a steed to take out and familiarize myself with TWS's very long 2.9-mile roadcourse. Pat Pruitt (Yahnozha) graciously let me take out his mean G20. This is one stout NA street car, I can tell you that. It handled and braked very well, and I had a ton of fun driving this car. I also got to instruct his girl, Marla, on course. That girl can drive, let me tell you.
I beamed like a schoolgirl when Marla told me she picked up 10 mph on the main straight because of some things I showed her on track.
My pleasure, Marla.

Here's Pat and Marla snoozing ever-so-cutely during the lunch break we took at TWS. They're just soooo cute together.

I sneaked up on the flag stand for one of the sessions, and shot some neat pics. Like this Classic getting a Spec V at the finish line. Classics *always* win.

Terry Vincent's Creamsicle Classic flying down the banked straight. Joe D got the car up to 140mph, which had to of been pretty scary when the time came to brake and turn left at the end. Nice car with a GT28RS under the hood.

Jason S's terribly wicked VE-equipped track slut. Jason was gracious enough to let me drive his awesome track car (with license plates...it was DRIVEN to Texas, by the way) in the final 'beginner' session. WOW, what a car. Easily the best car on track that day. It just begged to be beaten and came back for more, lap after lap. The ShockTek suspension was dreamy, and the Wilwood brakes never even hiccuped in 8 laps.
I came up on two other drivers *so* quickly that it scared them, and I quickly apologized afterwards. Jason's car is a race car with license plates, make no mistake about it. An even 80mph through the 'Esses) and 126mph down the back straight is no joke, my friends. Great car.

Mark (Vladha) owns this bone-stock Classic, and quite honestly, it was a big hoot to drive this thing for just one lap at TWS. It reminded me why I love these cars. It wasn't fast, didn't turn well, and the brakes were average. But the sum of the parts was just fantastic. Mark is allowed 3 more mods and then he must keep the car the way it is. I love this car.

Part Two:

Big John showing off the weight reduction. Not on his car, on him! John looked great, and his VE-powered 200SX was a very well done street car.

California SR20 boys. All you need to know.

Matt O's NX chewed up a clutch on track, so Saturday was spent doing a clutch install of the parking lot at Embassy Suites in Austin. Knowing my aversion to FWD transaxles, I chipped in by shooting pics.

James Vick and Eric Waterman dive in to the NX's underside. Eric is an ace at removing FWD trannys. James is an ace at everything automotive. The guy knows his stuff.

Which one is not like the others? Matt's clutch obviously spit out a spring. We never found the missing piece of metal, and came to the conclusion that it was chewed into about a billion tiny pieces. We hope.

And there you go. More pics to come once I edit down the remaining 255 photos.

Some cars-on-track pics:

Convention organizer and resident Bitter Old Man, Bruce Hearn on track at TWS in his white Classic. Bruce did an AWESOME job with the convention, despite some pretty bad personal stuff happening in his life at the same time. Thumbs up and Godspeed to you, Bruce.

Eric Waterman REALLY wanted this picture, so here it is, my friend. Your VE-powered 200 sounded MEAN coming down the banked straightaway.

More Cali SR20 boyz. More than enough said.

Jason S's VE-powered track whore, at speed. I got about 125-126mph out of this car on the straight, with my entry speed of 80mph. 45mph gain in speed down that short straight is no joke. If I were going to build a track-autocross monster of a car, I would duplicate Jason's down to the nut and bolt. Jim Shumacher built this car RIGHT.

Josh P. in the NX (I think). If that wasn't you, JP, I apologize. So many people driving so many cars, it was hard to keep track. Neat NX. I got a good look at this car in the last session when I was a man-on-a-mission in Jason's VE-powered SE-R.

Matt O's VE-powered NX at speed. It chewed up a clutch disk, but was very fast down the front straight regardless.

A Jag on track? Yep. Joe D. passed me during the instructors' session in this car, as I didn't feel like driving more than 75% at the time.

The Creamsicle SE-R of Terry Vincent, aka the 140mph missile. A Disco Potato under the hood meant that this car was a rocket on the front straight. Neat car, nice guy.

I think we could have gone 7 cars wide, if need be. TWS is a wide track, that's for sure. Matt O. is pointing by the freight train of SE-Rs breathing down his neck. Matt was on a cool-down lap, the others were not.

Pat Pruitt (Yahnozha) at speed in his mighty G20. This was the car I drove to get acquainted with the TWS 2.9-mile circuit. I can tell you that Azenis are great tires after my drive in this car.

Awesome pic. That's your story and I'm sticking to it.

I was one of the only cars in the Intermediate session without boost, VE, or serious bolt-ons. I got my lunch stolen and eaten up on the front straight, but I didn't give up much on the rest of the track. My Hyperco G2's, Azenis, and Carbotech Panther Pluses let me hunt down some of those fast cars when it got twisty again.

Great pics as always GP. I had a blast but the wind at the track sucked. It's blowing like that here again today too. I had a good tail wind bringing Tucker's back home.

Greg, very nice photo of me...couldn't have timed it better for the finish line.

Thanks for the kind words, too. For those that didn't make this year's Convention, the theme was "This is how NOT to run a Convention". If attendees had a great time, it was in spite of my efforts, not because.

Of course, I probably didn't help with my "Oh my GAWD the park is CLOSED!" panic attack.

Everything worked out in the end, nobody died, nobody ended up in jail ... wait, is James Vick back yet? And the track fun made me forget any little inconveniences ... and when are we having another track day?

Apparently, Kieran, Ray and Joe forgot how much work it is to run one of theses things because they're talkin' up Pocono area next year.

Where ever it is, I'm there.

Hey guys, you want my help, let me know.
