I talked to Clark Steppler today about this oil pump situation... He feels that the pump is fine for the DE or DET motor.. He said that he has some DE (non turbo) guys that run them in thier road race cars.. because the pickup tube and inlet of the pump is engineered to keep the pump from cavitating at high RPM.. which is apparently a problem on the DE/DET pumps. He said that the oil pressure isn't an issue.

We summed it up as a faulty part.. The bolt was probably improperly TQ'd at the factory, or the metal fatigued.. I will be inspecting all of my oil pumps.. new and used, from now on. I guess it wouldn't hurt to put a dab of Loctite on the bolt while I'm in there.

Were as a slow constant through rpm range will eventually result in the same volume and pressure it is not imediate. I don't think it's a valid argument to say that casual driving will result in the same Peak pressures as hard driving. I don't think most people will keep their car suspended at higher RPMs without WOT.

EDIT:
I'm viewing it from function over time perspective. Does it make any sense?
no, the oil pump's pressure curve should be a relatively linear RPM vs pressure curve. just becuase it is accelerating rapidly, does not mean it is going to "back up". the oil loss through bearings, VVL, cam squirters, etc, is always the same (or close enough) regardless of RPM. whether you're flooring it or not, the oil pump is always making the same pressure because it is driven off the crank. think of a supercharger.
