Some questions about track prep.

I am putting new rotors, pads and tires on the car wednesday night in preparation for the track day. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. I still have a couple questions despite the information in the convention forum. Are you guys bringing tools? Is there a place to put your tools while you are out on the track? I have a small amp and a single 12" sub in the trunk of the car, I guess I should just take the stuff out for the track day right? I am in the beginner group and the literature said that there is a mandatory track meeting at 8:30 A.M. for this group. If I show up at the track for the 8:30 meeting I should be cool right, or should I still try to be there a little earlier than 8:30.

You will need to remove EVERYTHING from your car.

Sub/amp... remove (you'll also want to make sure your wires to the trunk aren't live... they'll touch them together to make sure there won't be any issues on-track)
Floor matts... remove
EZ-Pass... remove
Junk in the glove box... remove
Radar detector... remove
Fuzzy dice hanging from the rearview... remove
ANY loose items in the car... remove!

It's for your own good. Trust me, you do NOT want something jamming itself under your brake pedal when you are approaching a turn at 90+ MPH!

As for the time to show up, there is a mandatory driver's meeting for ALL drivers and not just beginners. You will NOT be allowed on-track unless you attend this meeting. My suggestion would be that, even if you have the race tires, race pads, headlights taped, etc, etc done at home and plan on just showing up at the track, you should still plan on being there AT LEAST by 8AM. You don't want to be running around crazy trying to get last minute stuff done when your group is on the track!

As for tools (sorry I'm out of order... just went back and reread your message)... you should bring some general tools for anything you might need to do (bleed brakes, check brakepads, tighten lugnuts (anyone with new wheels... the lugs WILL come loose after a few laps... I'd suggest coming back in and checking them after 5 or so hot laps). Most people will have tools and most people will help you out and allow you to borrow their tools and help do whatever you need to get done and get your car moving.

Thanks. Now I won't feel like a complete Noob pulling all of my junk out of the car at the track at the last minute. One more question though, does the helmet have to be open or full faced. I own a full-faced motorcross style helmet but I would prefer if I could use an open-faced one, as it's easier to see out of.

I believe they will allow both types of helmet but realize they need to carry a Snell 95 rating or better.

Also PLEASE do yourself a favor and show up befoer 8:30. You will be rushed for time and likely forget or miss something.

I'd suggest everyone be there no later than 7:30. I'll be there at 7. It's just a good rule of thumb to get there good and early so you can do whatever is needed to be done to the car early. That way you can relax and focus on the task at hand

And laughing at Kieran watching how long it takes him to change his tires.

Done already. I swapped the tires Saturday night in an hour and a half which included two trips to the gas station for air. All I have to do which I'll do at Ray's house is swap the track pads

Also Joe and the rest of you... if you recall that was a rainy day at Limerock and I was the only person changing tires who was not on pavement and in the muddy, sandy grass. I was also in the last group out on the track. If I recall Joe and Ray had street tires even. I had to remove all but my boxers to drive home because I was so muddy. All anyone seems to remember is that it took me so long... not why

Uh huh... if you had only seen. I packed EVERYTHING into the car, grabbed a plastic bag, looked around to make sure no one was looking and stripped and threw the clothes in the bag, got in the car, and drove.
