We can all come up with reasons to not attend. Thats too easy. Find the way you CAN attend.
Exactly! Those who are constantly coming up with the excuses NOT to come are the same ones who have never been and the same ones that make a statement like "oh man, that looks like fun. I wish I had gone!" after the convention is over and they see pictures and video!

Can you say "Jeez, they better supply a case of KYB for that price"? I knew you could.
For $14k a day, they had better supply a pallet.....
I'd like to run Autobahn in Chicago. I've heard good things about it.

The only convention I've missed since 2000 was '04. The cost of plane tickets was too high, but I regreted not going. I've driven at least 12 hrs to each once, minus '02 (flew), and '03 (organized). I made a few trips to Birmingham, so it evened out. I would still go even if there wasn't a track event. It's fun to see friends I haven't seen in a year or so, and just to hang out.

Not an excuse... there are people who're poorer than any of us who make it to conventions. People complained that they were too poor to come to this year's convention. I was "too poor" to come to this year's convention and I helped organize the damned thing. Money is no excuse! I'm probably more in debt than a lot of you and the conventions just help me go further in debt. The convention is well worth that debt!
My debt is rapidly climbing towards six figures, I literally can't afford to add to it.
If you are in debt and don't have control of your money then you should not complain about not coming to the convention. You should almost praise yourself instead for showin self control and not attending. Learning self control is one of the first steps to gettting out of debt. So it's a good thing if you look at it properly. If you start planing now, find people to share a room with, etc. You can do it for a fair price. Hitch a ride with someone who is driving. Everyone acts like they have to bring "their" car. It's not just about the cars. If it was I would not attend again.
I will go to all conventions for sure regardless of where they are or WHEN they are. I've only missed one since 2000 and that was due to my own wedding being a handful of weeks after the convention.
Plan your weddings around the convention if you know the date far enough in advance (the reception was booked 2.5 years in advance in my case).
Plan your wife/girlfriend being pregnant around the convention! You always have AT LEAST 9 months warning of when the convention is. When the convention date is announced, don't get so excited that you immediately celebrate with sex and wind up having a pregnant wife/girlfriend that prevents you from going to the convention
Plan your kid's school year around the convention. At parent/teacher conference at the beginning of the school year, make it perfectly clear to your kid's teacher that you WILL be pulling your child out of school for a few days and that the teacher is not to have any important tests or quizzes while your kid is gone.
Plan your vacation around the convention. The convention isn't as much a car geekout as it used to be. Many people bring wives and kids... it's becoming (I hope) more family-oriented. Tell your boss that you're going to a convention that is too hard to explain and it would take too long to explain so he just needs to deal with the fact that you're going and that he should deal with it.
Plan your major modifications around the convention. If you are planning on swapping an engine, don't do it anywhere within 3 months of the convention. Leave in that ratty old engine and blow it up at the convention! You'll be releived to know that you have a replacement sitting in your garage 1400 miles away. Better to blow up the old, tired engine than to blow up the brand new one.
So what if your car's not in the best shape. Just don't try to do the track event with it then! You can still come to the convention and borrow someone else's car or just watch the track event and participate in the rest of the weekend's festivities.
Any other excuses I've missed? Don't be pussies about it... go to the convention, any convention. I guarantee you'll be hooked!
yikes that was long. I would of love to go but as it was in May I could not since I usually take a vacation towards the end of May for other reasons. So it is more of a personal priority. As for next year's convention, I told my wife about it and she is willing to go up there with me. I know if the convention will be in Vegas I will be there no matter what since I am local.
