FL is home to tons of SR guys, but no one has stepped up to organize one - I think Will is the only one who has attended one lately.
hey now, I flew out to AZ when I lived in Texas. And then after I move from Texas to Florida, it's in freakin Texas (well, after I flew out to CA from Florida the year before...) But I drove to Texas Was nice to finally have my car at the convention and rag it out.
But back to the point. The convention always has been, and will be, where people are willing to oragnize it. If more than one region wants to host it, I believe it comes down to whoever has the better proposal. It takes a ton of work to organize everything: track day, insurance, hotels, registration, forms, name tags, food, sponsers, etc. etc.

Having someone truely willing (crazy?) to do the leg work is the key. Most of the guys who have done a Convention swear they won't do another one (but some have).

The convention has KIND OF traditionally been decided around the time of the convention the previous year. When Ray Kawski and I went to Dallas in 00, we decided that we (stupidly) wanted it the following year. We'd been to one convention and decided to organize the following year's. We had *NO* idea what we were in for. From there, it was kind of a group of guys who were generous enough to volunteer to host the following year's convention. It looks like we're almost getting to the point that several groups/cities/people will be wanting to have a convention in a given year and we may need to set up a way of deciding. Yes, JP wanted it this year but Ray and I took it from him Chicago was decided a long time ago for 2007. Vegas I don't think is definite yet but seems like it'll happen in 2008 (and I'd love to do anything I could to help make it happen!). I see Will wants to do Florida in 2009... the list could go on and on.
What I think might be the best way of doing this is to put together the past organizers and vote on it this way. Previous organizers would be objective enough to look at a plan from a (hopefully) group of individuals and analyze who seems to have their act together and have the best plan. Having a general vote to the SR20forum, the general community, or even SERCA members wouldn't work. There would be too many opinions on where it should be with no one willing to do the work. sh*t, I'd love to see the convention on a Caribbean island. Is that realistic though? You'd also have a lot of people giving their opinion on where it should be and then not even wind up attending! I can't tell you how many people posted about things that they'd like seen differently or complaining about how something was going to be handled and then they didn't even show up this year! There is way too much "I'll be there" or "you should do this" without even coming to the convention.
Putting together a plan and submitting that to a "committee" from previous event organizers is the way to go.

Ask me about the 2011 Nissan-Infiniti National Convention www.nissan-infiniti.us
I agree with the people that have organized an event. The convention's are spread out enough for people to attend. The people that organize these things have knowledge of what it takes to make a successful convention and what locations have those things. What I see is a bunch of people complaning about how far away the conventions are and the reality is that if you want to go your gonna HAVE to travel. If you are not willing to travel for the group then why should you have a say in the location? Plain and simple your not paying for a membership to dictate where the conventions are located, you are a member because you believe in the group as a whole and their core values and goals.
As stated, next year is Chicago and Vegas is 08, these are not negotiable, if you do not want to travel to those locations to be with the group, then fine, don't go! Please don't whine and bitch as your the one who has to WANT to go, and that includes having the motivation to get your ass to the convention no matter where it is!
This post is not directed at anyone, but nonsense happens. While planning Kansas City '03, Heartland Park Topeka said, "We're bankrupt and shutting down operations."
A year later, they had a miraculous effort to redesign the road course, add facilities, and lay down an autocross pad. The SCCA built its headquarters half a mile away, and now HPT is the home of the SCCA Runoffs and Solo National Championships. How do you pull a rabbit out of a hat like that?
This is the sketchball stuff you have to deal with when planning a convention. Track owners can be notorious goons, too. Great to work with in person, but somehow "accidentally" double-book and futz final prices on private lapdays.
Conventions are all about stepping up, and Eric and the Birmingham crew did that for '03.
TEXAS IN 08' hehehe Texas anytime, everytime. Centrally located, well kinda. Good place anyways, we could have it at TMS hehe.
Have you been living under a cave or something? It was there in 2000 and then again last year. It probably won't be for several years since it needs to move around the country a bit. It'll probably be sometime around 2010 before it gets back to that area. And that's if someone volunteers to organize it. Can I put your name in the hat to organize a convention? If not (and this goes for everyone who wants to speak up and say "the convention should be here, close to my house") stop posting in threads like this and DEAL WITH IT
Yeah, the convention was nice and close and convenient for me this year. But I helped organize it and it wasn't worth the trouble. I'd much rather have it somewhere else and have it be a real vacation. I took the time off from work for the convention but it wasn't a vacation this year - it was work!
Since they did such a good job, I vote for Kieran and Ray to organize it in 2010!

I also attended this year..just the picnic. None of the South FL guys really want to attend one (only Will) because we are always left out of the loop. kinda like a boycott if you ask me.
To clear some things up, there are a couple of guys here in South FL that are interested in stepping up to the plate but according to some people, we are not allowed too. Why? Because we are not part of SERCA...which i personally think is a crock of sh*t. However, we will leave that discussion for another day.
In 2003, Rob, Serban, Mario (Sr20 B12) and couple more people organized the biggest Nissan meet in the U.S. With sponsers that included Nissan itself. There was approximately 300 Nissans in just 1 park. Serban and Rob , I'm sure can provide the proof.
There are people here that are willing to do some legwork for a South FL convention, including myself.

What do you mean left out? They were invited to come just the same as anyone else on the forum.

It is a SERCA convention afterall. I'm not sure how the FL are left out of the loop, when they never show up to the loop to begin with. Organizing a meet is one thing, the convention is much more than that.

Well, couple years back (don't remember exactly when)...we asked to see if we could have the convention here in SOFL, but we got the "no" basically because we don't have SERCA chapter down here
