I had my hunk 'o sh*t... Birmingham is the reason I flew to Chicago. I did the 21 hour drive to AL and there was no reason I was doing a similar (18 I think?) drive to Chicago! That was uncomfortable and I think *I* started asking "are we there yet?"

Is the battery secure? Does it flop around? You WILL fail tech with a flopping battery. You should probably buy a cheap SA2000 or better helmet as I doubt there will be any loaners. I'd offer but that never goes well. I'll either be instructing or driving at any given time so I can't offer.
no its secured in a battry hold down. dam so 180 plus another 100-150 for a helmet just to race. wow getting kinda expensive for me. gotta ask my friends if they have one.
It's not racing first of all. It's a driver's education event. You will be learning to drive your car fast on a track. There are no prizes for finishing "first" there will be no recognition of the fastest car or the car who does the most laps in a session. You will be on track and you will learn how your car handles (or doesn't handle... I see you have a turbo - chances are you will blow an intercooler hose or something stupid) on a track. The helmet is worth it and you will be able to use it at future track days (you WILL get hooked) and you can use it at the dragstrip as well. multi use
i didnt mean race like that. i know what you mean. yeah ive never race in an event like this( learing to drive on a track ). yeah im debating if im going to race or not. thats my thing if i drive im not going to race if i do im going to trailor my car for the fact incase somthing happens or breaks. i know this is going to cost some $$$ but i know it will all be worth it.
Birmingham wasn't a bad drive at all! Now Austin on the other hand was a bit long...
Imagine approaching it from the boring side... We flew through CA, AZ and NM and saw the TX state line and thought "almost there!"
Wrong.
Driving through the middle of nowhere for hours, upon hours, upon hours on end sucks. You get nervous and get gas every damned station and it takes even longer. Combine that with whacky Mapquest directions and No-Doze keeping you going for a 20 hour straight stint, and you've got the makings of a very, very bad time.

What about for those who already have several track events under their belt? Is there going to be a seperate class or is everyone getting the "driver's education" treatment?

We usually have 3 run groups for those of different experience levels.

Everyone will not have instructors. Those with multiple events will be in an advanced or intermediate group.

Actually usually 4 depending on number of participants. It'd be beginner, intermediate, advanced, instructor

It wasn't much better on our end. Try driving behind a Pathfinder towing a car, with no trailer lights. We had to stay behind him enough that we could see the 3rd brake light through the car on the trailer. When we got to Dallas, I thought we were almost there. Wrong. TX sucks.

Yeah... Chicago was funny... the instructor group I think had one or two SE-Rs. I'll have a rental in the instructor group this year as well

You have no idea... Ray and I learned how much Texas sucks when we went for the 00 convention. We were driving for a half hour from the rental place before we saw a sign for the airport exit! Then the directions told us to take Route whatever and get off 2nd Street exit. Well, we saw 1st Street and then 3rd Street. We turned around at 3rd Street and the next exit was 1st Street. We turned around again and paid VERY close attention. There were no overpasses or underpasses yet the first exit was 3rd Street! We got off on a backroad (I think it was 1st or 3rd) and we got lost. After 4 hours (literally!) of driving, we found a gas station with an IHOP at 3AM. We asked the waitress and she had no clue. We asked a cop and I think he barely knew where to go. After 4-5 hours we finally got to to the hotel and it was only a 5 minute drive!

Yeah, I feel bad for Erich. Poor guy was all by himself following us. how he stayed awake was beyond me...

Well, as long as you're faster than Ray, you'll be alright...

Which brought about the concept of pre-driving and printing the directions?
