Octane Level for the SE-R

Hey all,
I have searched the forum... new user here. Supposed to pick up the 98 SE-R on Monday. I was just wondering... for all of you with stock SE-R's. I was wondering what octane the most of you run (with stock timing). I understand that the timing is around 13-15 stock...

Is 87 legit? I will not be tuning at all and just want to make sure the car is treated right, no abuse... it will be a (fun) daily driver.

I'm originally from the clubprotege.com forum, had to get rid of my 94 DX and pick up something with some pep... Peace

Later,
Meen

87 is fine, that's what I run with timing @ 17*

If gas wasn't so expensive I'd prob. run midgrade....

everyone always says 87 runs fine blah blah blah but i have just your basic bolt ons and my car isnt as powerful or as smooth with 87 octane piss gas, 89 will keep my car smooth and peppy and with 93 the car feels like it should so do some experimenting for yourself

blah blah blah. Do what the owner's manual recommends as a baseline (87-octane). Fool around with the higher octane if you want (check the timing first). Only rich people run 89-octane and higher on lightly-built motors (since they don't care they're wasting money).

Agreed... I finally brought her home today... I filled her with 87 for now... I'll check the timing tomorrow... I will run her til she's empty and next week, I will see if 89 makes a difference. I will be running completely stock... its the daily driver. Thanks all

Peace,
Meen

93 octane all the way! Its only an extra $2.60 to fill up your tank with 93 intstead of 89. And I'm a poor Air Force airman

I have I/H/E and my 200 se-r hates any 87 (except BP for some odd resaon) all mid grades and premium gas gives the same responses, good all around. the 87 octane feels the same until the engine is under high load, then it starts to "cough" during shifts, stutters and spits above about 5K.

How old are you plugs? lower octane tends to burn hotter and if your plugs are worn out, it might cause the symptoms you're mentioning.

true, but it would seem that a high level octane would burn slower(93*). in a sence you would be gettin your moneys worth by filling up with it.u will save money by using 87* but i always seen to have valve rattle, slugishness on some 87* octane fuels.

One of the joys of living in Iowa. The midgrade gas is cheaper than 87 for us because they try to encourage the purchasing of ethanol. Thus, I run 89. But I do agree that the car seems a lot smoother when running the highest octane available. Its not much of an issue with stock-lightly modded NA engines. Worry more about octane levels when your highly tuned, or turboed.

All grades combust at the same speed. The difference is the energy needed to initiate combustion.

check out what i have done. since i can remember. my car has always been stronger with 89 than 87. when i had no mods and with all the work i have now, 87 runs it better, faster, and more powerful.
