I need to get a cat-back exhaust for my car & I thought I may as well get a performance exhaust. Which is better, Greddy or HKS? Stillen carries them both for $499 & $459 respectively. Is this a good price? Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Well i dont have any on my car but ive seen a few. i would probaly recomend the courtsey with the dragger oval tip. its a good price and good quality. I wouldnt recomened the stillen, NoVTECSER had one and the muffler rusted out, well he had 2 i think. the greddy i dont know much about heard it drones a bit
they are all better than the factory one. one or another might make 1-2 hp more than the other one. it just depends on what you want. full bolt on car, I would go with (trying to be impartial here) the courtesy 2.5 inch cat back. I got it on my car (muffler only though). stillen is alright, I had it on my car for about 1.5 years and no real complaints, not as loud as my courtesy, but droned alot. the hks I have never heard, the greddy sounds like a pissed off bumble bee when you are on it, but quiet at idle. real nice, and would be my second choice behind the courtesy. and then you could go into the custom kits w/ universal mufflers (seriously) like the stromung or the remus (no cheap 89 buck mufflers on your se-r please) sound real good and deep too.
I ordered the Greddy system from $tillen this morning as well as a set of Unorthodox Racing underdrive pulleys (just the crank & water pump). I'll let you all know what my impressions are. Thanks for the feedback.
ya, there is no 3" tip. the only ones made are the tanabe style (about 4") and the greddy style (5" tip) I like both of em, but ya, the tip is a little big imho, but hey, what can you do?
first of all, it really depends on what you are looking for in an exhaust(i.e. sound performance, pipe size, etc.) there is no *best* exhaust for our cars. the popular ones seem to be stillen greddy hks remus and courtesy though. i myself have the courtesy 2.5" catback. most others come with 2 1/4" pipes though. i believe there is no loss of power with the bigger pipes as some may say. i noticed a dramatic gain of top end though. i love it. no matter what people or adds say however, you will almost never gain more than 5 or 6 horsepower from and exhaust. it been proven. it gives performance not power. i have only one complaint about my courtesy, the tip. it is a massive 5 inch opening. i asked for the 3 inch but thats what i got. and i know that happened to a couple others also. so maybe there is no actual 3 inch tip. ive heard from many the stillen tends to rust early. ive heard complaints about highways dronoing from the greddy and have neutral complains about the hks. and good things about the remus. thats my .02
I'm going to modify my tip to reduce droning on the highway(Courtesy Catback, 4.5" tip). I will either add my own heavy-duty version of the new bomb silencer, or (gasp) cut the tig welded tip off for a smaller one. Think I'll try idea one first.
AS for the HKS, saw/heard my first one on a 96 SE-R Friday night. Not very loud, not buzzy, somewhat understated. Nice, but still love my Courtesy.
The sound is SWWWWWEEEEEETTT. Doesnt sound like the normal honda wine crap. Everyone in town loves the sound. Its deep. On the highway it can get a little loud. Actually the tone changed a little by just increasing rpms by 100. The sound was greatly reduced by putting a little dynamat over the muffler area in the trunk. The GReddy wasnt cheap, but to me it was worth it.
I have an HKS Dragger and it's great. The tone is deep and consistent. Never sounds like a Honda. However, it does get a bit louder as it wears in (settling?). I think it's still a bit cheaper than the Greddy, too.
