200SX Crystal Clear Headlight Writeup...

Okay here goes for those that wanted it, by the way anybody got a place to host the pictures when I run out of bandwidth?

A SMALL NOTE: I just realized this when I was taking pictures today at night, but it appears I didn't put in the grille correctly. I only put in the top two clips and NOT the bottom three, ha oops. But it aligns better with the headlights this way though as seen in the pictures. I looked at it with the lower clips in and it doesn't look like the the grille sits flush like i have it now. With the lower clips in, the grille sits too far back...

First, go and find the article on NPM (www.nissanperformancemag.com) for
the crystal clear corner install. And you might find something on the web about the crystal headlight install. I kinda read up on the projector install on NPM for Project 1.6 Turbo. But that tells to do more than you need to.
Second, You'll need to make sure you have the right tools. You need a socket wrench, some sockets (especially the 10mm one I think, a phillips screwdriver, needle nose pliers, a hand held saw (any kind of saw actually), and nail clippers (I'll explain a minute). Probably a couple other things but nothing someone won't have in a regular toolbox or household fixing kit. Helps if you have a Hayes manual too. Those are cheap. Also BE SURE YOU GET
H4 wiring harnesses. You can create an adapter but I just wired my harness in.
Okay from here you just have to set aside a 4 hour chunk of time. And that's being generous.
1. You basically remove the grille first with the needle nose pliers. There are 5 clips.
2. Remove the corners by unscrewing the one screw and popping the corner off.
3. remove the current headlights. There are a couple nuts in back on the headlight housing as well as the bolts on the side.
4. Take you new headlight housing and saw off the two plastic arms that stick of from the side toward what would be the grille if the lights were on the car. saw close to the diagonal edge. Prep your headlight by putting in the bulbs and assemble the headlights, meaning the rubber peice and the plastic piece that hold the bulb in. I used 9003 Sylvania Silverstars. Any H4 or 9003 bulbs will do.
5. Use one of your new lights to test fit and try putting on the
headlight. Take notice of the area you just sawed off and see how it meets the metal grille support bracket.
6. Now try to line up the holes on the side of the housing with the holes on the side headlight bracket. You'll need to put in the two bolts to hold the headlight to the car as well as a couple nuts in the back of the housing.
7. Now it gets a little tricky. Prep you corners by using the nail
clipper to clip of the three smaller tabs on each corner bulb socket. test fit the socket into the housing and read the write up on NPM to see what I mean.
8. Try puting on the matching corner and see how close the bracket for the corner gets to the hole on the headlight for the arm bracket. Make sure you are putting the corner on correctly as there is a small metal tab on the fender that fits into the side of corner. And the part of the corner that fits onto the small metal part on the headlight.
9. Now you're going to have to lean on the whole assembly a little and get the hole on the corner arm bracket to line up with the hole on top of the headlight housing so that you can screw it in. THIS IS WHERE YOU REALIZE FITMENT IS A BITCH. You may have to even remove the top side bolt so that you can pull the housing forward a little to match up the holes. (I had to
leave the top bolt off on each side.)
10. Once you get this part you're home free. Tighten and adjust all screws and nuts. Then repeat for the other side.
11. Disconnect the battery ( maybe doing this first is a good idea too) and Wire in your harness for the housing. I cut off the stock socket. Pay attention to what wire is what and match what matches first then whatever is left out of the three should connect together. Use electrical tape (buy some good tape that will withstand more heat and stuff) and put heat shrink tubing on it if you like, I did.
12. There is a hole for a small socket and bulb that goes into the headlight housing. From what i understand these are for city lights. I plugged the holes using plastic plug buttons from autozone, and duct tape. it'll keep the inside of the housing nice and dry.
13. Connect the battery and test those babies out.

Pics:

Left/Passenger Side

Right/Driver's Side

Left Side Up Close - Notice the screw inside the clear corner? I don't think the more expensive Mossy sells have that do they? But hey not very noticable unless your real close looking at it.

Top of Left headlight - Notice how the housing hits the grille bracket. Also how I cut off the plastic on the headlight.

Night Picture from Front - per request.

One quick ? for ya:

Do you notice a big difference in the way your headlights shine??? I need some very bright lights because I have my whole windshield tinted and I sometimes have a hard time seeing at night. Just wondering if I should get HID's before I do this install! Thanks

Not too sure...

Mark - not too sure about your question. I use Sylvania Silverstars and they are good enough for me. But I dont have window tint and live in the city with lots of cars and streets lights. The high beams are nice and bright though. The light is definitely clearer and little brighter but the bulb is still covered by the little plastic piece.

And yes it definitely sucks that HIDs are so expensive...

Where did you purchase the crystal clear headlights? Also, how much did you pay for them? TIA

You can get them from...

You can get them from liuspeed I believe. I got the corners from his groupbuy a little while back. Also I bought the headlights from somebody that sr20steve refered. So a quick search on crystal clear headlights and find a thread titled "Problem with Crystal Clear headlights" something like that...

Jaytee - the picture at night is up now. Take a look at the bottom of the first post.

Also I updated my post above with some new info at the top about how the grille fits...

great write up! I STILL have yet to install mine. But because I am having all sorts of problems with my car besides lighting. BUT I am planning on having everything squared away this month including installing the crystal clears with HIDs, most likely the Phillips 6000k kit for $430 at the groupbuycenter.com

OK I finally intsalled my crystal clears. They look great, the only prolems I ran into where because I am using my stock corners (I want amber ones) so I had to shave off the nub that holds the crystal clear corners on. When you look at the crystal clears in the box compared to your stock lights they look really really different, but allot of the support brackets from the old ones also go with the old ones. Also I did not even remove my grill to install (because I could not get the damn thing off to save my life) But the new lights are VERY bright and I am just using stock bulbs till I get HID's. Thank plinfinity

Re: 200SX Crystal Clear Headlight Writeup...

I found a way to get similiar lights for 1/3 of the price. I picked up 99 SE-L factory crystals from a forum member for $75 - they look great except they have a little different shape. Actually mesh pretty well with the stock 98 SE grille. I will have pics soon. But not bad considering the new clears are like $300 a pair.

Re: 200SX Crystal Clear Headlight Writeup...

completly different style of headlights... its not the same as crystal clear.. it doesnt have the same back cut... it is crystal clear though.. but Crystal clear H4 lamps will PWN the hell out of the 9007 headlights of the 99/98
