I guess coaxials are just like regular 2 or 3 way speakers. The components have a seperate woofer and tweeter with an external crossover. Here is another link:

Also, I have read that with just a good set of components up front you dont really even need speakers in the rear deck. Especially if you are powering the speakers with the head unit and not an external amp.

I tried it out the other day. I just faded all the sound to my front speakers and they sounded cleaner at high volume than when the head unit was trying to power all 4 speakers.
