Yeah, it sounds like he took a turn for the worse a couple of weeks ago, went into the hospital and they diagnosed the cancer as terminal at that point. He was such a strong person that he was full of life and laughter right up to the end.

I don't think Jake ever posted on here, but I recall seeing posts from his younger brother Matt back when they were doing the VE swap in the rally car. With the VE that thing was unstoppable, and at the Lake Superior ProRally that year Jake got the car up to 7th place overall in a field of 70+ cars, including the Subaru and Mitsubishi factory teams and the Air Force reserve team. On the second day, his older brother Silas was driving just as fast, but Jake (by his own admission) made a navigational error that took them out of contention.

I can't start to explain how important Jake was to rally in the US and how many lives he touched. He was the most fearless driver I've ever seen, a tireless promoter of the sport, a dedicated father and husband. He was the kind of guy who would stop in the middle of a blizzard and pull a complete stranger out of the ditch, while towing a trailer on the way to a race. He was one of a kind, and I'm a better person for having known him.

A fund has been set up to provide assistance to his family (this was set up just before he passed away).

Quote:
Jacob Himes Family Benefit Fund

The Jacob Himes Family Benefit Fund has been established to take care of some of the monetary needs for the family of Jake Himes as he battles with cancer and beyond. The fund will be used for such things as fixing their car and house and whatever else they might need like food and clothing.

There are multiple ways you can donate to the benefit fund:

The first and easiest way is go to your local Wells Fargo bank and tell them that you would like to donate to the Jacob Himes Family Benefit Fund and they will deposit your money into the fund. If you bank online with Wells Fargo it is even easier, contact Jared Kemp for the details.

The second way is through PayPal.com. The address you can send money to is: JHimesFBF@yahoo.com that will get transferred to the fund at Wells Fargo. You can also send email to this address and they will get relayed to the family.

The third way is to mail a check. The checks can be mailed to:

Steve Kovala
Bank President
220 Northwest First Avenue
Grand Rapids, MN 55744

Or

Jared Kemp
12638 Van Horn Road
Floodwood, MN 55736

Their house may need $10,000 or more worth of work, their car may need about $2000 worth of parts and the family will need money to survive.

Legal: Donations to Jacob Himes Family Benefit Fund are not tax-deductible for federal income tax purposes. Receipts of your donation can not be issued.

Thank You!
