Calum's Realtime Daughterboard:
Notes:
Calum has reverse engineered the stock ECU and created an emulator for it in the form of a daughterboard.
You get control of ignition and VE maps, as well as a few other things such as rev limit.
Not a full featured stand-alone, but pretty close and getting closer every day thanks to continued work by Calum and others.
Installation:
Plug-and-play. Swap your current ECU with the new one. Couldn't be easier.

AEM Plug & Play Engine Management System:
Notes:
Plug & Play Engine Management Systems FAQs...
AEM's Plug & Play Engine Management System (EMS) plugs directly into a vehicle's factory ECU harness and requires no additional wiring or hardware. Windows™ compatible software (2000, XP, NT, 98, 95, ME) makes the task of copying, viewing and manipulating data as simple as a click of the mouse. An integrated tuning wizard allows users to create a base map specifically for a car’s configuration, regardless of what type of injectors, sensors, coils or other changes have been made. The AEM EMS's infinitely adjustable software allows tuners to program virtually any combination of engine control, power adders and auxiliary devices, and accurately delivers proper amounts of fuel and correct ignition timing for any boost level or operating condition.
- Installs in minutes using Plug & Play technology—no wiring necessary!
- Start-up calibrations included for map or maf based nissans
- Live help window eases tuning process
- Set-up Wizard creates a custom base map for your car
- System is fully enabled—Never pay for upgrades!
- Free software updates on aempower.com
- Uses all the factory sensors (full support for AEM or GM sensors as well)
- Runs on Windows™ compatible software
- Fuel table automapping
- Programmable traction control
- Onboard 512kb datalogger
- Up to 10 cylinder sequential fuel injection
- 16 general-purpose outputs
- 7 definable switch inputs

Apparently this gives you all wideband functionality and integration for less cost.
Installation:
Plug and Play to stock harness (Universal comes with wire to make a harness)
Reliability/Known Issues:
- 24+1 style CAS disc is recommended (RWD engines only).
The stock Nissan CAS disc has 360 slots for for the camshaft angle portion. At high engine speeds, the ECU can be overwhelmed with the amount of incoming information causing trigger errors. Replacement CAS discs with fewer slots are offered (similar to VEMS's solution) and are 50 mm only which should fit your RWD CAS as they use 50 mm discs from the factory. Cost of custom 50 mm CAS disc through AEM as of this writing: $50.
- Fuel delivery maps use injector pulse width for fuel delivery with 0.07 resolution. This makes setting a specific air/fuel ratio during idle difficult or impossible while using large injectors (740cc and larger).
Communication:
Serial connection or USB/Serial adapter connection. I have used mulitple serial/USB adapters with success.
Verify Firmware and Software versions before useing old AEMPro software.

VEMS GenBoard v3:
Notes:
Formerly open source ECU. Used heavily on BMW, Audi and 4-cylinder Nissan engines by European tuners.
Forum member
BenFenner was the first to install VEMS on a FWD SR20 and has many of the kinks worked out. Read about his progress in the research link below.
Optional LCD display shows sensor readings; eliminating the need for all/most gauges.
- Support for most common trigger arrangements.
- 1-8 cylinder full sequential injection with coil on plug/coil near plug, wasted spark, or 1-2 distributors. Or, 10-16 cylinder semi-sequential with wasted-spark/ 1-2 distributors.
- Wide open throttle closed loop Lambda control (WOT closed loop) - lambda (AFR) mapable through entire loadsite-range (pressure, RPM)
- Self learning VE table
- 2 channel acoustic knock sensing. Ignition can be configured to be adjusted automatically within a range from configured reference table
- Integrated fully mappable, digitally controlled BoostController
- 2 channel exhaust gas temperature (EGT)
- Advanced idle control using bipolar stepper or (ON/OFF or PWM) solenoid and ignition advance for fine adjustments. Together with precise all-loadsites WBO2 this results in awesome idle quality if tuned properly.
Installation:
Highly involved. VEMS to Nissan harness plug adapter must be made, or new wiring harness created. Swap to coil-on-plug is highly recommended and the swap to a 50 mm style CAS is required.
- CAS problem/solution:
The stock Nissan CAS disc has 360 slots for for the camshaft angle portion. At high engine speeds, the ECU will be overwhelmed with the amount of incoming information causing trigger errors. Replacement CAS discs with fewer slots are offered (similar to AEM's solution) and are 50 mm only. This requires those with 54 mm style CAS to upgrade to 50 mm style CAS (distributor with built in coil). Cost of used 50 mm style CAS distributor as of this writing: $75. Cost of custom 50 mm CAS disc through VEMS as of this writing: $30.
- Distributor problem/solution:
Use of distributor to send spark is problematic (but theoretically possible). A switch to coil-on-plug solution is highly recommended. The COPs from a Honda CBR 600 work well and fit with minor modification to coil packs and valve cover. Cost of used COPs and harness as of this writing: $50.
Communication:
Serial. USB to serial adapter works, but is not recommended.
Can be configured in a pinch using optional LCD and PS/2 keyboard in the absence of a laptop.
Software Interface:
MegaTune (publicly available)
Reliability/Known Issues:
- The optional LCD screens are prone to defective operation.
- Grounding is very important with VEMS. It does not tolerate poor grounds.
- The low current output (P259) driver won't take much abuse, and may fry if treated to any high electrical load. Other outputs can be used instead.

$432.00 (assemble your own)
