If you don't do anything too radical, a turbo shouldn't require too much maintenence or upkeep, but if you want to learn, build your own NA. Once it starts up and runs great, you have a real feeling of accomplishment.
Search before you ask any questions about how to build it or what to do though. There are many threads in the All motor forum of this and the dash to keep you occupied and learning for a while.
