P10 audio system snap/crackle/pop

I had posted about this a while back, suspecting one or more of my spakers, but that seems rather unlikely. Sometimess - it comes and goes - the OE stereo in my '96 P10 will start crackling badly. When it does this, it will do it if the system is on, regardless of audio source or volume. It does not appear to be speakers, because there is no change when I move the output to individual speakers or pairs using the fader and balance controls. So this would seem to leave connectors, the amp, or the head unit. Connections at the speakers seem unlikely for the above reason. So..is the amp or the head unit more likely, and why?

Comments welcome,
david
