You can use the standard SR20 76,5 Celcius degree thermostat without any problem and it will actually improve your engine cooling efficiency. Please keep in mind that you cannot use any other thermostat lower than that.
I was using a low-temp wide flow type thermostat till my tuner found out some extra settings on the ecu. There is a cold start phase starting from 20 to 75 degrees on engines that use a stock 82 degree thermostat. The same setting exists on engines that use a 76,5 degree thermostat but the cold start off is at 65 degrees.
If your engine is constantly at cold start you would loose a noticeable amount of power and you would have a terrible fuel mileage.
