ok i just bought a 1990 nissan 240 it is already my pride and joy but something is missing... a sr20det motor. I've done a little homework but i'm pretty sure i haven't done enough i still have a few questions. I want the S15 sr20blacktop 6speed i was curious if this swap would fit just as well as the sr20red top 5sp. would. also i don't want to use the 6 speed right away i would like to use a 5speed. Is this possiable if so what 5 speed would be good to use, and is there anything i should look out for when using the 5sp? Where would be a good place to buy a sr motor at? and i paln on doing the swap myself but i want to get it tuned right away. I live in a small town in colorado where american muscle is the big thing and i wont trust anyone to do any work on that motor. I've heard of a place called mack auto sports near denver is this a good place to go if not any suggestions? thanks for any help!

just thought i'd thrown this in hopefully it'll help. eventually i would like to build the car for highway runs, which is why i want to use the 6speed later on. but alos i would love more then anything to beat any "snake" cobra mustang i come across!
u want to build a car for racing on the highway? dumbest sh*t ever.....
the S15 tranny doesnt have a speed sensor location...the S15 gest its signal from the rear diff, so be ready to swap your diff as well or run no speedo, your call.
it doesnt matter if a company specializes in muscle import, domestic, diesel, motorcycle, etc...they all have the same principals of operation and design, the tuning is all the same in the end. You will need to have a way of tuning the engine, even *** if its all stock it wont be needed.
i say do your engine swap and keep everything simple, you dont need a Nissan specialist for anything or fancy build stuff until its needed.
You can't use the S15 diff, in its casing anyway. There are other ways to get the speedo working, none of them cheap or easy.
If you want highway speed, the 6-speed won't help. The top gear isn't any longer than 5th gear in the 5-speed.
Doing an S15 swap into an S13 is expensive and complicated. It would be easier to use an S13 or even S14 engine and stick a bigger turbo on it, which would see you making more power than the S15 engine anyway.

i just did a s15 into a s14 for someone.. it was crazy i say stick with the 5 speed it is better anyways.. they wanted the s15 the kept saying 6 speed is better..lol..
I am so glade that i posted a forum. I had just assumed that the s15 swap would be just as easy as the s13 swap. what would be best to go with the s13 or the s14, and if i'm to go with a bigger turbo what would be a good turbo to go with. and if i'm not mistaken doesn't the head gasket (sp) need to be replaced if i want to push more boost?
Please, please, please go do some reading. Most of your questions have been answered over and over already. You can search here, but you will find more 240 and RWD SR info at:
DO NOT try to post these questions there, you will be flamed severely.
You have to answer some basic questions: how much money do you have? How much boost do you want to "push?" Is this a drag car, drift car, road course car, autocross car, daily driver? No offense but a "highway car" won't go over here. We have strict rules about street racing stories (they're banned, and if you post them you might also be banned) and generally feel that street racing is unsafe and foolish in addition to being illegal.
Go do some research. When you have some more specific goals then we can help you better.
not to mention how much boost you want to push has nothing to do with how much power you want. 10 psi out of a t25 is much different than 10 psi out of a t66... and your head gasket doesn't have to be replaced until 350-400 hp though its never a bad idea to replace it before then.
just do a simple sr20 swap and then add some supporting mods. see how you like it and go from there. i take it this is your first project? why try to make your first the fastest thing ever?(which it won't be)

S13 Swap is best for you. The 1990 240sx is not like the 91-94 240sx. The power steering lines run on the passanger side on the 1990 and the tachometer on the 90 doesn't work with the the Sr20. Plus the S13 swap is way easier because all you need to switch is like 8 wires. In your case you would have to get a 91-94 240sx tach.
btw: the 6 speed transmissions are weaker than the 5 speed because they use thinner gears to squeeze an extra gear in essentially the same gear box.
i dont know who started the whole s15 tranny being weaker thing, go to zilvia and try to run that by the guns using the 6gear tranny. they'll flame you hardcore!
The 6 speed doesnt hold up as well as the 5 when you start talking big hp numbers, for factory number its fine though, it also uses some different parts (clutch i think) which means its not a straight swap going from a 6 speed to 5
plain and simple the 6speed is not strong... clutch kick it, and down shift, and beat on it and its a short mater of time before the sycros are gone... 6 speed is over over rated!

your trippin.. more stuff packed into the same size case almost, the syncros are WEAKER PROVEENN!! are you talkin about a sequential 6speed, if soo there strong! for 15k!
what do you mean by big hp? the stock tranny craps out around 400hp ne ways. there are some fellas on zilvia running over that on the s15 6 speed.
what all this comes down to is it would be alot more work for potentially no increase of performance in the end.
wrong again lol, zilvia is a bunch of tards, a bunch of here say bullsh*t that i bet only 10% really are speaking from experience.. thats why i stick to this forum thats not even for my car lol.... the s13 tranny will do 600hp and be pushing it! but even at that point, TRACTION! unless you tub the sh*t outa the car traction will always be a issue... no traction = no stress/load on tranny. theres a couple people that attempted the 6 speed for drifting and syncros crapped out quick.. 5speed is off the hook lol! plain and simple our drive train is pretty stout..
wow and i thought this thread was dead lol. well for those of you still wondering i no longer have my 90 240 some kid offered me 2 grand for it and when i bought it for 1200 i couldn't say no, especially with the problems it has been giving me. I've managed to buy a 95 240 with 70,000 miles on the motor and the body isn't in bad shape either. I've decided to stick with the red top. It seems alot easier and cheaper. I'm hoping to start the swap in the next two months. It just depends on how quickly i can save the money to buy the motor. stupid discount tire cut my hrs. I'm thinking that its just about time to jump to the oil rigs.
