I just finished my SR swap and I am not getting any coolant temp reading on my dash gauge. My old SOHC setup had a temp sensor in the lower radiator hose. The SR clip I received didn't have one. Is there only 1 coolant temp sensor for SRs?
The temp sensor in the lower rad hose is ONLY there to activate the electric fan in front of the condensor, it has nothing to do with the ECU or gauges.
There's one two-wire sensor for water temp for the ECU, and a single-wire spade sensor for the gauge in the dash. Either the single-wire sensor is bad, or the wiring for the dash isn't right (you have to change some things), or the gauge itself is kaput.

The plug for the dash coolant sensor should be on the upper engine harness right? Where is the dash coolant sensor? I can only find one on the FSM (S14 SR FSM)
It's right next to the ECU coolant sensor. Do you also have the S14 SR engine? On my S13 SR the two sensors, if you stand at the front of the car and face the engine, are just to the right of the throttle body. They're sort of between the head and the intake manifold.
Well, you can stop looking. There is NO S13 SR20DET FSM in English It just doesn't exist, and most of us make do with the S14 manual for engine stuff, and the USDM manual for chassis and other stuff...
I believe it will work if you're using a USDM gauge cluster. I know on FWD cars the JDM sensor doesn't work with the USDM gauges, but I'm not sure on the RWD cars. My redtop is using the JDM sensor that was in it, and a USDM cluster, and it works.
Having said that, I'm not actually sure if the KA sensor will even thread into the SR engine, but it probably will. Just be careful not to bung up the threads.
I used my KA Coolant temp sensor for the gauge, and it worked. Now I am trying to replace the 2-wire one for the ECU. I bought one from Phase2, they said it works for KA24de and SR20det, but it doesn't even plug into the harness. What can I use that will work?
That gauge on the cluster is pretty much useless, as it only displays in 3 positions:
1) engine's cold, not warm yet
2) normal operating temp
3) oops, your engine overheated about 5 min ago, so I'll creep my way up to the red zone towards H slowly
And it's not that your gauge doesn't work, it's because the sensor reads in completely different voltages.
If you get your car hot enough, your stock gauge will move.
The needle will get up to the C line or just above it during normal operating temp, about 185-190* F or so. If it goes up over 200* it'll start to crawl up to the 1st line. Anything below 175* the needle just sits at the "the gauge is not working" position.
It doesn't fit, I bought a CTS sensor from phase2 that said it would work for a ka24de and SR20det...but it won't plug into my harness, the connector is different. That is the problem.
I would call Phase2 and figure out the problem, then have them either send you the right thing or give you the money back (assuming it isn't an error on your part). Other than being a little slow, Phase2 has always done right by me.
For those of you who haven't yet bought one, I got one from Enjuku and had no problems with installation or operation. It was a little pricey @$35, but I'm at the point in my build that I'm willing to spend more money instead of spending the time to find an alternative or worrying about whether or not the cheap solution will work.
