Koni Suspension - Finally, putting it on the car!

Well, I thought I'd start a new thread once I got to putting it all on the car... about damn time . I only did the fronts today, the rears I'm saving for tomorrow or Sunday.

One quick comparison of the Silkroads to the Koni setup...

The drivers side bolted up... I did lower the collar about 4 turns from where you see it now. The springs are 550lb 6" springs that I traded for about 1 month back.

And here's the car about 1.5" lower in the front...

I knocked the front struts in as far as I could and it looks like I'm sitting at just under 2 degrees of camber. Clearance from tire to spring is now about 22mm, so plenty of inboard room for a bigger wheel/tire combo. I started by turning the dampeners to 1.5 turns and left it at that for now.

The short ride I took felt great, for 550lb springs, they kill the Silkroad coilovers with 330lb springs on the front. It sucks up the small and big bumps easily. The only place you can tell it's stiffer is on smaller stuff at slow speeds, like going over the rolled curbing to our back alleyway.

I can't wait till I get the rears on and can take the car out for some funner rides...

Is the season over as far as tracking days??

This is looking good as always... I'm envious of your "tuning" and wrenching abilities...

Cheers-

When are you going to get the car corner-weighted?

I'm not even sure there is a place to corner weight the car in Pullman, unless one of his local race buddies has a set of scales to do it.

I've done this with the sentra in the past and felt it to be a waste of $100. I'm not saying it's important, but rather it's something to be done after everything else is done and you know your not going to be changing anything on your car for a while. Also, for a car that is DD and see only HPDE and open lapping days its really not as important IMHO. I felt zero difference with the sentra... of course how would I know since I don't do any timed events with the car

Now Richard, Pullman isn't that small . Of course your right, the closest place with some longacre scales is in Spokane and with the mechanic that works for the race teams in the area

Sorry, going to have to disagree here. I put the Tein Super Streets on the M3 and dialed the perches exactly. The car handled wonderfully, but was 100x better after I had it corner-weighted.

My comment has always been: "why spend all that money on suspension and not pay a small amount of money to finish it off?"

Do what you like, btu $100 is nothing to a baller like you.

Seems like I hit a small snag tonight... part of what comes with buying 2nd hand I guess. The rear pillowmounts don't seem to be for an S13, maybe an S14.

I found the right one at FRSport.com for 129 and am making the order right now. I tried to just use the Silkroad setup, but the shaft diameters are different

________________________________________________
edit - guess I'll add the additional pictures from yesterday.

How I eliminated rear slop (when the car is unloaded) in the sleeves. This also helps keep the sleeves stationary when your trying to adjust the perch.

Overall comparison of the Silkroads to the Koni setup. The eibach spring is a 7", 400lb spring btw. The threaded collars stick up farther than I want, but will not cut them down due to there being a high chance I'll be going to a rear 8610 setup and using these same threaded collar.

Why corner balance/weight the car if I'm going to have to raise the car due to tire changes that I'm going to be making next year and changing up the rear's to 8610's. As I mentioned before, I will consider this as the very last thing I'd do to the suspension... from past experience.

The part about wasting money on the sentra had more to do with me having to raise the car within two weeks of corner weighting it due to rubbing in the rear at an autoX. Then to top it off, when I went to the 225 width hooisers I had to raise the car up a good inch in the front to keep the tires off the fenders. I think the Saturday I spent corner weighting the car just went out the window... along with the $100

The fronts are laying on the garage floor and the rears are back on the car...

If you asking what I'm going to do with them... sell them to help fund more parts

Like corner balancing .

On that topic My B14 corner balanced exactly the same height as the car was stock minus the drop. For most people I think it's wise just to measure it's wheel stock and then lower the same amount on each corner (don't try and make up any differences). If you want perfect just pay the $100. My Right rear was .75 high stock and after corner balancing it was .75 high again. ARGHHH.

I hinted to them in my first response... guess you can't read my mind

I'm pretty sure the funds from the silkroads will be going towards a custom 8610 setup for the rear of the car

Well, were buried in snow right now... no more play time for a few weeks if that

More driving impressions:
I was able to take the car out for a drive on Saturday to get a better feel for the front suspension. I took a normal road that I normally take each day to work, the road is patched in a few spots and has a railroad crossing with uneven pavement on both sides. I usually have to slow to 15mph when crossing the railroad tracks with the 240, if not it just feels like your going to break something on the car . I hit the tracks at about 30mph and it just felt amazing, just a thud thud thud, the car went up and down with the road, but the normal jolt I was used to feeling wasn't there. And to think I went up 200+ lb's on my spring rates too . As for driving ove the patched sections of road or just rougher sections... you can feel it, just not as bad as the typical JDM coilover. The roughest of roads is still not as comfortable as say the outback, but that's not what I was after with this setup to begin with .

I'm still going to throw on the 440lb spring in the front out of curiosity. The 550lb springs feel fine, but I'm curious and don't plan on getting an alignment till after the rears are on and I play with the ride height some... or just wait till spring since the car won't be gettin driven much anyways

Cost breakdown: (a few of you guys has asked for this )

-Koni 8610-1436RACE inserts, fronts (price may vary) --- $330 <-- can be purchased through Veilside180sx or 98sr20ve, price may vary some.
-Koni yellow sports, rears --- $200 <-- same source as above
-Custom 86XX housings, front --- $350 <--- Veilside180sx
-Tein camber plates & pillowmounts --- $280 <-- FRsport.com
-Ground Control kit --- $400 <--- might want to deal with GC on this one and ask for a rubber tophat for the G20, this is the one that I got. Also ask for a rear tophat with a 18-20mm I.D.
-Misc bearings from Mcmaster Carr --- $20

Total, your looking at around $1500 (all new parts) plus the cost of shipping for some of these and any other misc pieces you need to find on the way. You can cut costs by purchasing used and looking for good deals if your patient.

Thanks, I just confirmation that the correct Tein pillowmounts are at the house... so hopefully I'll have the rears on tonight and be able to go out for a drive in the sub-zero weather tonight
