In a month I'm going to buy a 240sx and I want to know what the potental of the KA is? What HP can it take? Is the block reliable? How much would a SR20DET cost?(Realisticaly to get in my car, install, and all, in other words how much should I save in order to get it done and done right?). Is it more cost efficent to get the SR over the KA in the long run for a lot of HP.

How much pwer do you want? If you just
want 200-230whp, i would stay KA, but if you
want more, and do want to buy new rods and
other stuff just get a SR. The cost on the swap
depends on which DET you get.

I'm going to turbo my SOHC KA and I expect 300whp from my setup. The SOHC are dirt cheap and sometimes free (like mine ) so if I go through a few to find the stock bottom end limits then no big deal. My car came with a headless KA that I can build up if I want to after I put the (free) complete engine in. 250 WHP is cake for a turbo KA at 8psi because of the extra displacement.

Your first must figure out if the engine is a KA24D or KA24DE. Why do you need to know this well the DE is a dual over head cam engine which means more power. Not to mention its a better engine all together. What year are you getting. Hatch back or Coupe?

i honestly think the ka is an underestimated underdog....I would rather keep it in my 240 (if I had one) than swap in an sr engine. Honestly...the sr engine swap is more of a fad anyways. of course it works, but it reminds me of a bandwagon thing. and i love my sr..dont get me wrong

Why would it be a fad if it is something that you really want to do? If you buy all the stuff and have a shop do everything for you, sure...it's like having someone do a B18C swap in your civic. I don't have much respect for those people.

Now, for someone like myself that loves projects, especially those that make you really work for your end result, doing the SR swap is just another project that I want to undertake.

In the case of my 240, my KA has every bit of 201K miles on it and would need to be rebuilt if I wanted to boost it. So, if it all has to come out anyway...

It comes down to this: To each his own. I'm tired of reading SR vs KA swap arguments. Do what you want...not what everyone tells you to do.

Okay, I'm getting off of the soap box.

i only said its like a fad because every other magazine has at LEAST one they are doing a feature on. usually when its in the magazines everyone starts doing it, and I have seen a lot of them. If I offended you I didnt mean to. I like them personally, if I could find a 240 for cheap and the engine had a lot of miles on it I might do an SR swap as well. To each his own, I dont really care. I just wanted to throw the KA in there *** its just as potent as the SR. thats all.

The KA24DE can run reliably with 350 whp on the stock bottom end if you don't cut corners on fuel and timing management. If you build the bottom end, the limits are obviously much higher. There are people putting down more than 500 whp with built bottom end KAs.

My impression is that up until about 300-350 whp, the KA is cheaper because you can just use the stock bottom end. To run more than about 260-280 whp on the SR, you'll have to replace the turbo. For higher hp levels, they will both cost a lot, probably not much different from each other.

The KA does have the advantage if you make a mistake and blow it up...replacements are much cheaper!
