Andreas is better to answer this but I'm pretty sure the 97-01 VE engines use a distributor with an internal coil just like the 95 and up DE's. No rewiring would be necessary if you use the stock DE harness. If you have a 91-94 harness you'll have to split wires from the DE harness and feed them to the internal VE coil.

I think the 02 VE engine rated at 205hp uses coil packs and an electronic throttle or throttle by wire system. This would be a pretty complicated swap.
