Cam tuning

Hey sorry for a somewhat newbie question, im considering getting some camshafts for my 96 SE-R but im getting some mixed info. Do you or do you not need adjustable cam gears when purchasing cams? How difficult is tuning cams on our cars. And would the need for cam gears vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, for example would greddy cams work okay on stock cam gears (assuming the dowel pin is changed so that the s13 cam will work on a b14) or would they need a cam gear?

no, they are not required, and to be honest, a big waste of money unless you have a dyno to tune them on.

They are more crucial with a heavily modded engine. If you have a regular (SSAC, HS gen 5 etc) header, you would be find dropping S3s or S4s in. If you had a DE with C3s and a HS gen 6, it would definitely be worth your while to tune the cam timing. It's a bit of a pain in the ass as you have to remove the valve cover each time you change settings

Just as stated above...I would only purchase a set of Adjustable Cam Gears if I had a set of huge cams or a heavily moddified/high HP motor. But with some basic street cams such as some JWT S3 and S4's just to name a couple options, then no I wouldn't bother with them. Since they are a pain to tune because of the money you will need to spend on Dyno time and the PITA part of taking the VC off everytime to adjust the Cam Gears.
