So from what I'm gathering...you don't need to install the springs and retainers? You can just run the cams alone?
Yeah, but people are saying you should get them if you do alot of high rpm driving... I would definitely get them if I didn't keep hearing this. Installing springs and retainers is a little above my skills, so I think I'll just go with some used s4's instead. Unless somebody can tell me for a fact that s/r are definitely not needed then I'll get them because I do ALOT of high rpm driving and I can't be worried about valve float.

The stock valve springs are very close to coil bind. any difference in head shimming and spring in stalled height can affect this.
also, because the cams are somewhat aggressive, i recomend them because any slight miss shift, to say 8000rpm will probobly float the valves enough to bend them.

the engine will run fine without them though.
So even if I redline my car alot there won't be any problems??

This is how I have come to understand it. Float is when your valves move so fast the springs can't control them. Once that happens the valves can hit a piston and bend
$220 shipped, IIRC. Well worth a sound mind, if you ask me.
Personally, it doesn't make sense to spend $$$ on just JWT S4 cams, and still have the possibility that you're going to damage internal components because you mis-shifted. That mis-shift could end up costing you a lot of your time and money just to get it running again.

I call that a problem cause everyone misses at least one shift.
That's why I hilighted SR20TurboFreak's post
If you want to risk taking your car to that danger zone, be my guest. I for one feel more confident that I'm going to be able to take it beyond 8K rpm without worrying about bending valves.
