Hydraulic lifters have "give" in them so to speak to make sure contact is maintained on the rocker to shims durating the cam rotation cycle.
Solid lifters have an advantage at high RPM simply because they are solid - there is a constant and consistent strength contract during the whole rpm range. The reason being motors like the GTIR are solid is that hydraulic lifters tend to get pump up in high rpm - and loose a percentage of their ability to maintain firm contact between the rocker and shims - leading to thrown rockers etc.
The downside to having solid rocker?
1)Clearances have to be precise - otherwise their noisy as buggery and arent as effective. Be prepared to get a set of feeler guages and checking the shims tolerances every 10-20,000km's.
2) Your camshaft choices becomes limited as you need a different grind on different sticks.
