Read Mike Kojima's exhaust design article, and talk to a local shop about having one made from 2.25" tubing. Not smaller, not bigger, 2.25" is said to be optimum on SR20DE-powered cars with bolt on mods. If you had S4 or C-series cams, 2.5" would be a better idea, but for now. 2.25" it is. If you don't want to go to the trouble of finding somebody that won't screw you, get the Pacesetter system from Nopi, Summit, or just about anybody that carries Pacesetter stuff, and have your own tip welded onto it. Guess what size it is...

Forgot to mention...a header should be a higher priority for you, if you don't have one already. It's known that a header by itself on an SR20DE car makes more horsepower with a stock exhaust than the stock exhaust manifold does with an aftermarket cat-back system...

how hard is it to put in headers and does it hurt gas mileage???
Not really going to race it. Mostly just for enjoyment what headers do u go with for and what is a fair price for a good header

You could probably pay a mechanic $100 to slap the headers on, if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. You will prolly want to get a new o2 sensor ($60), depending on how many miles you have. That will do nothing but improve your mileage. Also, I've never heard of headers hurting mileage. Just adding performance.

HotShot headers are constructed with a high level of quality in mind, have all required emissions fittings (EGR, AIV, o2) and are supposed to give the best gains. You can probably snag one from a forum member in good condition for $250-400 depending on age, generation, and overall quality.

Then for exhaust, you'll want 2.25", no more than 2.5" on an NA motor. Courtesy Nissan sells a nice stainless steel midpipe that is 2.5" in diameter for $189 + $38.95 shipping. Gives a good, deep sound, not ricey - and good gains, too. Stock muffler looks sleeper. But, header first IMO.

Get the HS headers, you'll be glad you did. Quality matters!

Headers are like any other breathing mod; if you keep your foot out of it, it usually improves the situation (unlike a fuel system mod, which usually hurts). A header is only slightly more difficult to install than a cat-back exhaust system; the hardest part is removing the bolts holding the stock system together.

As for header recommendations, Hot Shot and Stillen are generally considered the best all-around (though not the only) options currently available. The other "good" headers (AEBS, S&S, others) are very hard to come by, while HS, Stillen, and Pacesetter are not. Pacesetter, by the way, also makes a header for SR20DE vehicles. It's considered low-quality, though they're EXTREMELY cheap, and it's available in three finishes and materials; mild steel painted black, mild steal with "ceramic" paint, and stainless steel. Do a search on this board, there are a couple of threads in which we discussed this option within the last few weeks.

All FWD SR20DEs are pretty much the same between the exhaust port and the main cat, so a header that's labeled "For '91-93 Sentra SE-R" will also fit a '02 G20, a '97 200SX, and pretty much everything in between.

Re: what exhaust to buy???

Get a 2k-2k2 maxima muffler and have a muffler shop install a 2.25in catback piping. My SE-R is quiet on the freeway no drone whatsoever.

2k-2k2? Surely you're not talking about that variable-capacity piece of crap...

Most people have 2.25, yes, but the courtesy is a good buy for the money. I don't think it would hurt your NA performance at all. Besides, it was designed for NA, wasn't it? (someone back me up here, or correct me) It's stainless, mandrel bent, and is even good in case you go turbo in the future (stock turbo T25).

People have said good things about the dynomax ultra-flo muffler, but I've no experience on the sound or performance of it. It's a quality peice though, from a respected company. Nissanaccessories.com has a borla rear section for like $279 for the sentra se-r and NX2000. My ideal setup on the egg would be courtesy mid-pipe, borla rear section. The cost is high, but I'm sure the quality is the same. Hope this helped a little..

Clearly, you have not read Mike's article yet. Head to www.NissanPerformanceMag.com and look through his stuff. Priceless information and opinions.
