: lights dim @ WOT/high RPM
spudnex 12-09-2001, 10:49 AM My interior and exterior lights dim under heavy acceleration. It seems like it gets worse with every engine mod. It never happened when the car was stock, installed a CAI and I started noticing the problem. I recently put a new header on and now the dimming is real bad. I would love to think that my car is so smart and wants to go fast as bad as me that it sucks away all unnecessary power use, and uses it at the wheels. But, back here in reality I have to think that if every other electrical system is losing power; I'm probably not getting the best spark. Any advice?
DaGenesis 12-09-2001, 02:15 PM yea i notice my headlights gettin real dim at high rpm and wot.. makes me wonder how the ignition system is doin
Storm88000 12-09-2001, 02:23 PM Sounds like an alternator problem. Do you have UR pulleys?
DaGenesis 12-09-2001, 07:51 PM i dont have pullies
i hope it aint the alternator, itll be another thing i gotta replace:(
Stiletto 12-10-2001, 02:50 AM but is it possible the ECU isn't adjusting 100% for all the mods? other than removing the rev limiter and governor, don't they also manage the electrical and fuel systems more effeciently? just a thought, i dunno.
spudnex 12-10-2001, 11:37 PM nope, no UR pulleys.
Bwilsor 12-12-2001, 08:58 AM I have had this problem since the summer.
Today the inevitable happened. Being late for work I was driving aggresively, as I shifted from 2nd to 3rd the battery and brake lights flashed. The lights weent out and a shift from 3rd to 4th triggered them again. They stayed on as i shifted to 5th and truned off after abput 3 miles.
It lookes to me it is the alternator take a slow poop.
RPWSER 12-12-2001, 05:12 PM Yeah, I....uuhhhh, hate to burst your bubble, but its time to replace that alternator.....Have Fun!!! ;) :)
DaGenesis 12-12-2001, 11:10 PM am i losing power in hi rpms because of this?
RPWSER 12-12-2001, 11:44 PM Umm, nooo. I wouldn't think so. Its just your electricals that are acting funny for now. Motorwise you should really be ok, of course, that is until the car wont go anywhere *** your alt died :)
Bwilsor 12-13-2001, 08:25 AM Well I just barely got it started this morning. It was a very cold and quite ride but I made it to the mechanic.
spudnex 12-18-2001, 12:22 PM ...how big of a job is it? Should I upgrade?
I think the job is pretty easy. Two electric connectors, a couple bolts, move the belt out of the way, remove the unit. Installation is reverse of removal. :)
Sub_Function 12-26-2001, 03:12 PM Yeah you know I am having the same issue. I posted this in the general discussion board. I think it is the alternator and not the pulleys. But what I'm going to do, is replace the alernator, replace stcok pulleys, and do all the friggin belts why i am at it. makes sense right!
I'll let you all know if it works, helps or what not.!
Bwilsor 12-26-2001, 03:23 PM ever since I've had mine changed, my lights stay bright and no flickering when an accesory is turned on.
94AztecClassic 12-27-2001, 03:21 AM yeah the alternator install is easy especially when you have no A/C and you have done the job 7 times. yep i changed it 7 tmes because my negative bttery termial was not grouded to the enigne so it ate up any alternator i put in my car, i was just too stupid to know until my dad is like "why is this cable not connected?"
spudnex 12-28-2001, 11:06 AM How do I check to see if the alternator is putting out the correct volts and amps? Could this also be a battery problem? How do you "load test" a battery?
