I know the manual states you can tow 1000 lbs but is that the max? Has anyone trailered say up to 1500 lbs with no trouble? I have seen trucks with less HP than the 2.0L nissan sentra and their max is 1500 lbs so what's up with our car set to only 1000 lbs? Just curious.
Thanks

it has more to do with the suspension and frame structure than horsepower. i'm not sure how much it could take, but that is the reason the capacity is so low.

it is set at that per the stock clutch. If you have a better clutch you can prolly pull the 1500, why would you do any towing with the sentra though?

With an automatic 200sx I towed easily 1500+ half way across the country. The transmission was pretty much about dead when I left...oddly enough, it still hasn't crapped out and it's been damn near 2 years since I did it. I wouldn't recommend it and if you do becareful of pot holes and other bad spots but it's doable.

I towed a 1200lb trailer with a 1.6 200sx from Iowa to Virginia. Just change the transmission fluid and try to avoid doing it on really hot days.

I think the towing capacity is defined by (as people have mentioned) transmission strength and heat properties, as well as frame strength. i.e.: a vehicle with high towing capacityhas a mounting area for the hitch that is specially designed to support the weight of whatever's being towed and transfer the stress evenly to the rest of the vehicle frame. Overtowing (I think) can bend the frame of the car, in addition to blowing the tranny. A 3 cyl Geo Metro could tow as much as a Yukon if the frame and tranny were properly designed for the task, although it would be a really slow tow, and probably wouldn't make it up hills very well!

front wheel drives aren't really good for towing much more than that amount anyway

this is a stupid question but....
could a Sentra SE be made to SAFELY tow a 240sx?
Maybe with a better clutch
what about braking?

i just pulled my sentra with a 1984 accord about 20 miles away from my home im pretty sure a sentra can pull more than that.

I can tell you that 1500lbs is really too much. The car is just too light to tow that much safely. It's one of those things you can do but should not do.

if its an automatic, stay out of 4th.

i wouldnt recommend it, esp considering you can rent a ranger for $20/day...

they don't allow towing, but they dont have to know you're towing... :D

So with a max. tow rating of 1000lbs for sentra how long or how often can you tow? I ask b/c I have a pretty large trailer 5x10 with about 300lbs of equip. on it I use for a business. I am right at the 1000lbs towing capacity, should I just not worry about it? Can I blow the tranny?
Thanks everyone.

I've been thinking on this too lately, I would "like" a truck, but cant afford one . For $200 I can get a mini hitch for the SE-R, and for $175, a small trailer off craigslist. Just enough for movin shit too big for the trunk.

My dad would let me borrow his truck, but a 396CID engines fuel consumption would outrun the cost of the parts quickly!

I say this because my fiance and I are finally moving in to our own place, and a lot of little shit need to be moved.

There is nothing wrong with using our cars for towing. They use a class 2 hitch which has a max capacity of 200# of tongue weight and 2000# of towing weight.
