Hi people, need some opinions.

I've got the Greddy's SP catback on my SE-R. I like the exhaust tone it makes but it is a little too quiet for my taste. (It is really a low quiet tone.) My question is how much louder do you think my exhaust would be if I removed the pre-muffler and just welded in a smooth pipe. I would still have the muffler at the rear. Also any thoughts on the tone I would be hearing. Higher pitched? It would seem to reason that doing this may improve performance slightly. Less backpressure.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Honestly you would gain nothing but noise.

Yeah I realize the gains, if any, would be almost nothing. I just didn't want to sound like too big of a ricer. The exhaust note being where I can hear it is what I'm after. You see I have lost about 40% in my left ear and around 10% in my right. (problems as a kid growing up, tubes and lots of operations left scars) The exhaust is quiet for people with "normal" hearing, so can you imagine it for deaf bastard like me?!! I don't want it to wake up the neighbors, I just want to be able to hear it.

Any thoughts on what it would sound like and how much louder?

(I have a gen 4 Hotshot header & stock cat.)

Thanks people:)

IF I was a guessing man I would guess your exhaust would be around 30% louder. That is about the best I could give you compared to when I took my resonator off of my car.

in my riceboy days i had a 1st gen hotshot header an hks intake and a sebring muffler w/ crush bends, still had the o.e cat. the exhaust noise was very loud, i received a good amount of fix it tickets including a motorcycle cop who said he heard me coming one city block away.

You would lose torque. NA motors need some form of back pressure. I took off my resonator and went to track and lost .20 seconds off of my 1/4 mile time. I had it rewelded back on and guess what, I gained it all back. You would simply end up with a louder exhaust note with nothing gained.

I had thought the cat, muffler, & bends in the piping would have provided enough back pressure. After reading your post I'll leave it alone. I don't want to hear it so bad that I'm willing to lose torque. Thanks Big Boost...waste any Grand Nationals latley? LOL:D

I have a Hotshot G2 header that is 2 1/2" from the collector to the CAT. I took the CAT out and replaced it with a 2 1/2" straight pipe. From there is goes to the GReddy cat-back system which is just shy of 2". I love it like that and it makes a nice tone (although it kind of "farts" or backfires sometimes when you let off the throttle). I personally noticed better throttle response and the car seemed to gain a little bit, although not much. My CAT was pretty nasty so I definitley gained something.

I will tell you my only benchmark to the difference: This guy used to talk shit about my car and about how his Prelude could smoke me any day of the week. Well, I continuously beat him at the track so he went and bought a VTEC controller the same week that I had my test pipe put in. He STILL couldn't catch me and everyone was teasing him *** he spent $300 on that controller and I only spent $50 to have that test pipe made and installed.

This is just my personal experience so other experiences may differ. I don't think that I've lost enough backpressure to hurt my bottom end. The bottom end "feels" much better to me and if I ever do nitrous or turbo, that pipe will make a WORLD of difference.

Intresting Jason. I have the Gen 4 Hotshot header, stock cat (but its the one with the "honeycomb" in it), then I have Greddy SP catback but its only 2" in dia. (I had my ex first & bought it for that) I know our cars can go 2.25" dia with no problems. So let me ask everybody again. Do you think this would cause a loss in torque??? With my 2" dia catback, could I have too much backpressure already?

So far I've got:

1 yea

1 nay

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Dang!! You think the Greddy is QUIET???!! That's insane! I have heard the Greddy SP on a classic, and it gave me headaches. Just go with no exhaust or something. How do you stand the droning at highway speeds?

I say go ahead and stick in the smooth pipe. I don't see how you could lose much pressure unless you stuck in a replacement pipe that was too large. I'm guessing your exhuast will get raspy, but I have no idea for sure.
