why shouldnt i just run the return line back to the oil pan? i mean my friend has a 2.0 vw that was turboed and his line goes to the oil pan i mean i know that the return line should be higher than the oil level but why????

you want to have a continous, unobstructed flow from the turbo back to the engine. If the return line is below the oil level in the case, it will be harder for the oil to pump back in. The seals on the turbo aren't designed for pressure and will leak if there's any backpressure whatsoever.
