: Questions on the 91 cam swap...
DenverSER 12-17-2001, 01:23 PM Hi all,
I have been reading a ton of threads on the 91 cam swap, but am totally unfamiliar with it. I was gonna save up for some JWT s3's, but now am wondering if it is worth the $$$.
Here we go:
1. Will the 91 cams work in my 98 SE-r (am planning on getting a JWT computer and a replacment rear O2 sensor).
2. What kind of perfomance gains are you all seeing? Anyone perform a dyno test?
3. How much are the 91 cams and are you pulling them from any 91 sr20de or is it a specific model, i.e. Sentra, NX2000, etc.?
Thanks in advance!
:D
Driven97 12-17-2001, 04:54 PM I did the cam swap on my '97. The 91 cam will working your '98, too. I picked the cam up on SE-R.net for $75 shipped. Only the intake cam is different. I don't have any dyno results personally, but it is estimated that the cam gives about 7hp. The car will run all the way to redline instead of die out at around 6500 like it used to. For the money, it's tough to beat except for the ES motor mount inserts...
Stiletto 12-17-2001, 05:00 PM 1. Yes.
2. You should see between 9-15 hp gain. it all depends on your current mods.
2a. i will be doin' a dyno run shortly after the new year. have the cam, just need to get it in!!
3. the price will vary (basically depends on who/where you buy it grom). i paid $80 for mine. IMO- don't pay more than $125 for a used one.
3a. most people get 'em from 91 sr20's that have died. i'm sure some brand new ones are floating around (mostly @ dealerships) no, they're not model specific, just gotta be from a sr20de.
DenverSER 12-17-2001, 07:20 PM Thanks all! :D

They help, but do not eliminate it. At least you don't have to worry so much about cracking your trans case if you do...
Benito Malito 12-18-2001, 10:59 AM yeah in the rain esp. I still get hop when Im overly enthusiastic. Have to stop that now that I got the cai though. Normally though these mounts do the trick. I think the jwt would be better for serious hp cause it has some complete replacement peices (not just inserts).
oh yeah and the 91 camswap is nice, and easy if you are prepared, and have a good set op plans. Really nice cheap upgrade
DenverSER 12-18-2001, 02:40 PM Thanks again, you guys have been really helpful:) Oh yea, I have 205/50 Kumho Ecsta 712's right now, don't know much about tires, but stick alot better than stock...
SmoothDaddyFig 12-19-2001, 05:33 PM install it yourself!!! heres some pointers:
*I recommend taking the tensioner off. Its not that big a deal to get back on. After its off, just push in the plunger and hook it with the hook. ( I placed it on the ground and used my body weight to get the plunger pushed in, then I hooked it. Oil will come out, too ) When you go to put it back in heres what to do to make it easy:
- Get it in as far as you can
- the threads that the nuts screw onto will hardly show
- If the nut will not screw in with the washer then screw one nut in without the washer till the OTHER bolt thread is exposed. On that OTHER thread, screw in the washer and nut. NOw take off the nut that didnt have the washer and re-install it with the washer. Then screw them both in. It might sound crazy with no "visual" but you will see what I mean.
* each sprocket has a orange dot. Put the intake at 10 o'clock and the exhaust at 12 o'clock. I used a BIG wrench to turn the crankshaft pulley till I set the dots right.
* When you take off the old cam , LOOKOUT!!, rockers arms are not bolted on the head, they will fall right out of place. Keep a good eye on things.
* When you put zip-ties on the chain sprockets, use some "White-out" or finger nail polish to mark the sprocket and chain as well. It comes in real handy when something slips and you're left wondering which sprocket tooth goes where. Mark it along the top.
* The cam will titter-totter when you place it in. Its okay. Just start tightening the bolts on the cam slowly!! Till they are all snug and the cam will flatten itself out on the rockers.
* DONT FORGET TO PUT THE OIL FILTER BACK ON!!!!!!
Jackson Diamond 12-22-2001, 11:57 PM I reccomend instead of pulling the tensioner out stick a blocker in. Cut out of wood a triangle shape large and small enough to slide in between the wall and the chain and bam tensioner is blocked. No worries. I can get you dimnesions, email me or P.M me. It really is a snap. Just take it slow and easy.
