Can someone please help me out...

I am in the process of doing the Phantom Grip install on an SR18DE transmission with VLSD, out of an N14 Pulsar GTi (Jap Import) and am up to the part where i've installed the friction plates into the diff...

Now on my instructions it says to make sure the clearances between the plates and spider gears are no more than .003" - .005" with the side clips on...!!!

My problem is that I have a clearance of .045" or 1mm which is 9 times more than the recommended clearance... Is this a major problem and will the unit still work or is the gap too much for the unit to be effective.

Any thoughts as i've got my transmission spread all over my living room floor...?

wow - this would seem to be beyond the scope of atleast 99.9% of the people here... anyone?

I am sure it's not... errm... I hope it's not...!!!

If that is the case then can the 0.1% please throw me a friggin' bone here... lol

Spoke to Jason at JGY tonight and he says it should be OK... but just want to make sure by asking people who may have been in the same situation...???

Cheers,

Kim.

I'll be doing the same thing in about 1 week here. Hopefully things go smoothly. I think the extra clearance, if anything, will reduce the force exerted on the spider gears by the JGY Customs Unit. I had heard of Phantom grip supplying "shims" that go into the spring holes to increase the preload on the setup, but also ensuring that you don't get spring bind when it is compressed.

Please let me know how you went with this and if you have any pictures taken i'd be very interested to see them.

Cheers.

OK, the Phantom Grip uses four linear wound coil springs to preload the friction plates.
If you do not get the space out requierd the result is the friction plates do not have the pre-load required, hence the friction component between the spider gears, proportional to load, will not be what's required.
The Spider Gear Shaft is what provides the anti-rotation of the two friction plates when the differential spider gears start counterotating.
Phantom Grip tends to make the shaft hole quite large and hence the separation forces allow quite abit of "slap".
My advise is this:
Make a pair of brass/bronze/steel bushings that will locate the shaft in the two semicircular scallops of the friction plates.
Shim the base of the springs by the difference between the intended and the actual clearances.
Make absolutely certain that the faces are true to the spider gears once things are fitted.
If, however your pin fits snugly enough inside the friction plates, then just use the shims on the springs as suggested.

I had to do the same on mine when I ran the PG. What helped as well was the PG Tuning Kit which comes with harder springs.
Additionally, it's all a waste realy. 5 Hard laps on the thing and the the dif would just "open" with little or no limmiting friction between wheels.
