: couple of questions about header (pic = 56K beware)
jeffinbham 02-17-2005, 02:38 PM i just got this today, and i'm going to install it saturday. are these holes labeled correctly? if i understand right, a 96 se-r won't need the avi. it can be plugged or but a breather filter on, right? the stock manifold has the o2 sensor sticking out and is visible through the shield, right? also should i replace it when i install the header? i've had the car since 83k, and i'm at 101k right now, i don't know if it was ever replaced.

one last question, which i searched about and got mixxed opinions, where the header bolts to the head, should i get a new gasket, or use the oem one? the only gasket is where the primary (pictured) bolts to the longer pipe that goes to the cat, i guess. sorry if these are stupid questions, but i'm more of a visual learner, so i've been a little confused reading through posts w/o pics.
sr20ser 02-17-2005, 02:53 PM I think you are correct. Oh, I would get a new gasket if there is one in stock.

SHAWNATGERBROCK 02-17-2005, 03:35 PM AIV has to be plugged, and you wont use the shield .. and yea, you will need a new manifold gasket ...
jeffinbham 02-17-2005, 03:59 PM thanks yall. i just wanted to make sure i had everthing in order so i won't get to my folk's garage and realize i need some extra part. will most exhaust shops (midas, etc) have a plug for the bung?
t bags 02-17-2005, 04:15 PM www.nissport.com they have the plug for it..or home depot
honkeybizkit 02-17-2005, 04:28 PM Get the manifold to head gasket for a 2001 sentra se 2.0, its a better gasket, its all metal.

shit, i just bought one at autozone for a 96 se-r. it can't make that much of a difference, right? is the gasket what causes some headers to rattle? if so, will return this one and exchange it.
jeffinbham 02-17-2005, 11:16 PM one last question... what exactly does the avi do? what's it stand for?
honkeybizkit 02-19-2005, 02:29 PM its AIV, air injection valve.
i belive it takes regular air and mixes it with the exhaust gases. i think they did it to get more oxygen in with the exhaust gases to get the catalytic converter hotter, faster on start up to burn out the harmful stuff.
someone correct me if i am off.
silversx 02-19-2005, 03:59 PM I think you're right honeybizkit, I was told something similar long ago.
mpg9999 02-19-2005, 04:51 PM Its not used on start up, but under deceleration because of something called port wall wetting. The other stuff is correct though, more oxygen for the cat to work with.
I would use your old o2 sensor for the first couple hundred miles on the header, and then replace it. I have heard of stuff burning off causing the oxygen sensor to go bad. Might not be neccesary, but its really not that hard to do.

Rittmeister 02-19-2005, 05:33 PM AIV only works at idle - it does what the EGR does, inject a small amount of exhaust into the intake stream to cut down on NOx emissions. The '94 and up cars don't even have AIV to start with (they leaned out the fuel map at idle, same result), so you have no worries there except finding a proper plug for the fitting.
jeffinbham 02-21-2005, 11:42 AM well, i went on a mythical search for a plug for the aiv on saturday, with no luck. ended up going by my old roomates work and had a guy weld the hole shut. works for me. anyway, i got back to the garage, and started taking the manifold off. all the nuts came off, except for the one under the black box on the far right side of the head, i was turning it, and the whole stud torqued off! at first, i was like, whoa, that's weird that all the other ones were studs and this on is a bolt, but then i looked at it, and it was obvious what had happeded. then i tried to get the egr fitting off, and didn't have any rust eater OR a properly sized wrench. i didn't want to chance it with the vice grips, cause that bolt is on super tight. i put everything back together (minus the broken stud), feeling totally defeated. yesterday i went to autozone and bought a 23mm and 24mm wrench, i'm not sure which one to use on the egr fitting. so my question is, will i have a big problem not having that stud on the far right? so far, it seems to be running fine without it, using the stock manifold. thanks for the replies- jeff
t bags 02-21-2005, 11:59 AM it will leak exh fumes slightly,u might want to tap that out with one of those autozone stud removers..did u use wd 40 enough

i didn't use any wd40 on the manifold studs, but that was the only one that gave me trouble. i sprayed wd40 on the egr fitting, but it didn't help, considering i didn't have a wrench to fit. i've talked to a couple of other people around here about the stud, but they seem to think it will be fine. i just wanted to get some opinions from people who know about the motor specifically. i may try to get it out, but how will the new stud go in? do you just hammer it in? thanks for the reply. - jeff
tHe iLleSt RiCe 02-21-2005, 03:23 PM i recently installed my stillen header and had one of the studs break on me, nothing to worry about really...but if you wanna fix it, u can use a tap and die set and re-tap that hole to fit a bigger bolt through.
nx2000racer 02-21-2005, 08:03 PM no one suggests putting the 02 sensor at the lowest bung where it would read oxygen from 2 clyinders rather than 1?

didnt catch that, the very top right is for the EGR.
the middle one is for the AIV
the last one is for the o2 sensor.
GUAM'S G20 02-22-2005, 01:34 AM yup the top right is for the egr
2nd is for the o2 censor
3rd is for the aiv pipe

no, the very bottom is for the o2 sensor, the middle is for the AIV
