Hey guys,

Strange problem here. A while back I took my dash apart, and when night came noticed that my defrost button did not illuminate, though it worked just fine. Several weeks later, the light seems to magically repair itself as the button was illuminated once again.

Yesterday I took my dash apart again for the first time in months. Put everything back together and lo and behold, now the hazard and defrost button do not light. Again, both work just swell. So I opened the dash back up and made sure the wire harnesses were secure. I took them out and secured them back in, wiggled them around, wiggled the wires inside the dash, but to no avail.

Any idea what kinda gremlin I've got and how to be rid of him!!??

Thanks,

Dan

sounds to be a short. but pull them out and replace the bulbs. wish eric still had his page up on how to do it. not hard if you look on the bottom of them there is a little slot in a blue or brown plastic circle. that holds the bulbs. 1/4 turn and they should fall out. pull the 'condom' off the bulbs and then pull them out of that plastic holder, go to radio shack and match them up. eric had the part number. it was a bit different on my car ***, the bulb was shorter than the oe one...but works just fine

Thanks man,

After I posted. I grabbed the working bulb out of the fog light button and put in in the hazard and then the defrost button and sure enough, it worked just fine.

So following bowlcut's instructions, I removed the "condoms" off the bad bulbs. These came off just dandy. Then I tried to remove the bulb and it broke. I hadn't realized you have to unravel the two wires from the top of the brown or black plastic piece first.

Anyhow, once those are unravelled, the bulbs will pull right out. After a few minutes at Radio Shack, I began to give up, as I had not found the right bulb. There are plenty of LEDs that look just like the bulbs, but those obviously won't work.

Then I found the "Micro Lamps" (part 272-1092C, #7219). They have long wire connectors at the end. It's a perfect replacement for the bulb located in the hazard light enclosure. I first put the "condom" back on, then carefully ran the wires through the two holes on the back of the plastic piece. Each wires then needs to be wrapped around following the little grooves. (It's a good idea to keep one bulb in the platic piece to see how the wires go).

After you do the wrapping, you'll need to trim the wires. Once they're trimmed, use a tweezers or other small object to make sure the wires are firmly planted into the grooves in the plastic.

As for the fog and defrost buttons, the bulbs are a bit too short and you'll find that the blue "condoms" don't fit all the way. Not to fret, just slide it on as far as it will go, get the bulb in place and secured and you'll find it lights the buttons just fine.

Oh, the dealer I went to wanted $7 A PIECE!!!! They didn't even have them in stock. So total price from Radio Shack?? $.75 per bulb. :D

yup thats it...knew with a little work someone could find the bulb. there is only one thats similar to it at the hack shack. what spawned eric figuring this out was that the dealer sit and told him the hazard never lit up. then proceded to tell him all he could do is replace the switch. leave it up to eric to try to pull something apart. but it works. i still need to do a couple more bulbs. never bought enough and after i replaced one or two another usualy burns out that was old.

When I went to the dealer, they told me the lights didn't light up at all. This was also after i showed them my FSM. My rear defroster light works one minute, and doesn't another. Maybe this weekend I'll take it apart, and do another write up. I lost my website when I switched from Mindspring to @home, and haven't had the time to do another one.
