: Scary discovery about my classic yesterday!
phycobob 03-12-2005, 04:33 PM Well I while back my 5th gear popped out and I thought "oh well, that was bound to happen" and thought nothing else of it. But in the past week I noticed that I couldnt get the car into 1st unless I came to a complete stop. So with the car at 215k, I decided on my next day off that I would change out the tranny oil and see if it made a difference. Bought 4qts of Royal Purple maxgear 75-90w (good stuff btw, pretty much the same as MT-90) and went to work. Start unscrewing the drain plug, expecting a good gush of nasty grey goo to fly out. Now the SCARY part. :eek2:   Less than a single qt of oil dripped out!!!! I've been running with almost ZERO gear oil for the past 6 months since I got the car! Im amazed the tranny didnt gernade itself a long time ago! Was hoping that maybe 5th would start working again all filled up, but its dead for sure. At least it shifts smoother and I can get into 1st easy again. I guess short story long, you might wanna replace your tranny oil if you've never done it or its been a long time. :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

The clutch cable stretches over time, especially after installing a stiffer PP, so you should probably readjust your clutch cable again.
I have the same clutch/PP setup and had the same issues.
zipstrips 03-13-2005, 04:34 PM after i installed a new ACT clutch set, and a brand new oem cable, i could never get the car to shift right, i think i ruined my 2nd gear due to this.. but my fix was pretty simple. i took the cable bracket, black L shaped part. comes out with 2 12mm or 14mm sockets.. i forget the size.. but i redrilled 2 new holes in it to move it closer to the firewall, which gave me cable like a 1/2 inch or adjustment to get it tight again.
93specv 03-13-2005, 05:48 PM on the subject of tranny lube, i work at valvoline and was able to fenagle my way in the shop to check my manual-due to i thaught it was leaking. i popped the plug and she was full, but old. so i drained and filled. now my question is my "haynes manual" says to use GL4 75w 90, i used GL4 80w 90 is this going to be a problem? the guys at work say this is what they put in most all nissans and not to worry. the 75w 90 we have is synthetic and choose not run that at this time.
zipstrips 03-13-2005, 09:13 PM most people here run redline heavy duty shock proof.. i believe its like a 75-90 but will withstand to a 75-250
s13conv 03-14-2005, 08:23 AM phycobob: Do you have a tranny leak? maybe from the switches?
HkSBlueBird4u 03-14-2005, 10:38 AM .. Yo Clutch Cables Sometimes Not All Dont Stretch.. Mine I Thought I Stretched It Out I Bought A New One From Nissan An It Was The Same Length... Mine Though Had Rust In The Cable Itself.. Soo The Rust Was Not Lettin The Cable Go In An Out.. If You Got Rust An This Your Cable Is Fucked Up Dfont Buy A New One Check It Out.. Take Off The Cable An Wd40 The Bitch.. Put Some In The Line An Flex It.
Also Your Tranny Leaked Out The Fluid Cause Your Outter Tranny Gaskets Have Probably Been Gone Since 97'
Egg_Sauce01 03-15-2005, 12:44 AM hmm.. i cannot get it into first gear without coming to a complete stop either. might have to try this.

Try putting it into 2nd first, clutch, hit neutral for a split second - clutch, and it should slip into 1st - at least it does on mine
