: cutting springs
Daniel2145 01-07-2002, 10:20 PM I got some sprint lowering springs for my '97 200sx, and i dont think they are low enough...... does anybody know if and how many coils i can chop off or if its safe to do it.........if any one of you have ever done it please reply to this.
Black200sxSER 01-07-2002, 11:46 PM DON'T DO IT! Sprint springs drop the car 2 inches..you are out of suspension travel...if you cut coils you will be on the bumpstops!!!
If you wanna be lower...save up for a Motivational set up...that is the only way to safely lower more than 2 inches.
Stiletto 01-08-2002, 12:07 AM don't even think about cutting springs! not on any kind of spring OEM or aftermarket. it is not safe!! if you hit a bump or dip you could lose control of the vehicle.
how low do you wanna be? actually, my question should be: why do wanna go so low?
Se-Racer 01-08-2002, 12:30 AM i did it to my sprints when i had them, DO NOT DO THIS your car will not even look any lower and it will ride like absolute shit and handle like a civic on stilts....i replaced my set-up soon afterwards
nismo200 01-08-2002, 01:52 PM I think everyone hit it pretty much...
BlkB14 01-08-2002, 03:26 PM Anybody got a link for the motivational setup?
What does it all consist of?
Digitek 01-08-2002, 04:05 PM Hehe well OEM spring Cutting works just fine
I chopped off 1 loop and a half on the front...1/4 less on the motor side
and 1 loop on the back
you need to cut the top of the black boot that is on top of the shock absorber on the front springs so it doesn't jump or bounce
here in Puerto Rico there are many mest up roads and many speed bumps and my car has been like this for 4 months now and it works great...I noticed the handeling and grip improve once I did this...but oh well there is always some noise SOME TIMES not always when u get a bump but nothing big to be woried or disturbe you.
but if you got the $$$ go for a suspension kit
but Im just fine with my cutted springs all im gona do is buy some harder shocks later on...
thats just my point of view...i see many desagree with this but its my opinion and what i did to my car you deside what u do to ur car or not...
but id say to go for it and try it if you aint got the $$$
but i wouldn't recomend to cut more than what I did
eventhou I got a friend who cutted his 2 loops each but I guess he bounces a little =/
Black200sxSER 01-08-2002, 04:16 PM I would not to listen to him....
http://www.motivational.net/
they are expensive, but the only way to drop it over 2 inches and have kidneys left when yo are 50....
You get shortened struts with coilovers..or you can just get shortened struts and do Ground Controls..or just shortened struts and drop springs..well, you get the picture

you can either get just the Shortened Struts (http://www.motivational.net/products/shortstruts.shtml) OR the Coilovers (http://www.motivational.net/products/coilovers.shtml). depends on how much $$ you wanna spend!
dammit Brad you're too fast. like quick draw mcgraw!!:D :D
CharlieH98 01-08-2002, 04:54 PM I got GC coil overs now......well, they're sold...so it's back to OEM springs which I WILL cut prior to installation....I wouldn't cut anything off aftermarket springs though...It's ok to cut the OEM springs a bit..Don't go nuts
Cheers,
Charlie :)
Black200sxSER 01-08-2002, 05:05 PM Right place, right time...:D
Yes-Ser 01-08-2002, 08:00 PM Is there anyone on the board running the motivational setup with just drop springs?
Storm88000 01-09-2002, 02:21 PM Cutting springs = Rice
You'll regret it. Our cars don't have much suspension travel anwyay. You car will handle WORSE than it did with the regular springs.

Amen to that, Jordan. Though, to each his own, I guess. Some people are looking for the aesthetic appeal of a lowered car, and could care less about how the car handles. Though I must ask... Is the harsh ride quality worth the aesthetic appeal of a slammed car? :)

97 Black SER 01-09-2002, 02:49 PM Damn, I should move this post over to Club SI.:(
Loe Lyf 01-09-2002, 06:42 PM Have you trimmed your bumpstops??
If not, cut a little off the bumb stop, maybe one level, and it should lower more.
stankser 01-09-2002, 07:45 PM Most likely he prob wont go with the motivational kit just because of the price...I think you should just get ground control coilovers w/agx 's...also dont forget a camber kit and alignment or you'll have no tires
martin_g34 01-10-2002, 02:16 AM If you go with just the shortened struts you can lower it two inches without feeling any difference. This is according to Mike at Motivational. My lady has them on her car with Pro-kits and the ride is superb. She loves them, but if you want some performance go with the coil-overs, I have those and swear by them. If you choose either one of these set-ups you wont be disappointed, they're worth every penny.

At first it is. I had Sportlines with AGX's on my SE. After 6 months I couldn't stand it anymore and put my old suspension back on.

Well... I was actually directing my original question towards the person who started this thread... heh. But yeah, I did the same thing when I first got my B14. Not even 2 months after I got the car, I threw some Eibach Sportlines on, while still utilizing the stock struts. Boy was that a big mistake! Car handled like crap (though I think the CRAPyear RS-A's where the main culprit), and the rear suspension bottomed out over just about every bump. It wasn't until 15k miles later that I finally got some GC's and AGX's, and raised the car to about 1/2-3/4" lower than stock height.
