: need help on tuning my DET
G22DET 01-09-2002, 02:33 AM Hey guys, first i wanna say i am pretty new to this forum, so "Hi all" i am pretty active on the G20 forum and have already spoken to George and a few others that's active on this forum...
anyway, i have a P11 (99+ g20) with BB motor. i think my AAC valve is not adjusted correctly because when i start my car, the engine would rev and slowly die down and eventually stalls the car if i dont hit the gas pedal a few times. Also, it's not idling smoothly and the rpm seems to go and down between 1k and 500rpm. any tips on adjusting the valve?
also, after the installation of the z32 fuel pump (by chris @ sr20dev) i noticed that everytime when i turn on the headlights or when the fans kick in, my idle would drop couple hundred RPMs, also when it's at night, when the fan kicks in again, the lights in and outside of the car would flicker for about half a second as if there's not enough voltage coming through. i just replaced my battery a few weeks after the fuel pump (it went dead) so i dont think the battery is bad...if it's related to it at all.
lastly, many of you are probably familiar with the A/C issue that when the AC is on, the car idle would drop significantly and tends to stall the car...what should i do to these issues?
thanks!
b-b00gie 01-09-2002, 08:28 AM Your car may be stalling cause your BOV isnt recirculated, you're blowing off to open air right?
This may be a problem when you're idling because your BOV is sitting wide open. The MAF is measuring air flow and adjusting the fuel delivery. If you're letting the air escape from the system there will be too much fuel (too rich) and you'll stall. When you rev up the motor the BOV is closed and that keeps your air/fuel ratio at proper levels.. which keeps you from stalling. ;)
The other stuff I dunno about. :D
TurbochargedSER 01-09-2002, 09:26 AM B-Boogie is correct! If you are blowing off into atmosphere, you will have an idle problem since the air that is being released is metered air. Try and recirculate the air after the MAF and before the turbo inlet and see if that works!
b-b00gie 01-09-2002, 09:41 AM Heh.. everyone loves BOV sounds but from researching here and on the SE-R list archives for my upcoming turbo, I've found out that you need to recirculate the air in a MAF equipped car.
SE-Rious B14 01-09-2002, 11:52 AM Yea those 2 guys are on point when talking about the BOV. I have a BB swap in my 200sx which is currently getting the plumbing done. The motor came with the stock BOV open, and I noticed the car running REALLY rich, i mean rich as hell, and when idling if i were to cover the BOV it would stall. I was scared to boost because after taking it to a nice 3 grand i would get some nasty backfire. I have the JWT ecu so i assume the ECU read not enough air so it would send in massive fuel. About the BOV, my friend has a Turbo XS type S on his DET and sounds AWESOME:D , that is the same one i will be using. That BOV i hear is ideal for MAF'd cars, and they run for about $120 and come with the flange and all. So good luck and i'll let you know what happens when my plumbing gets done.
G22DET 01-09-2002, 12:57 PM the idling problem is not due to the BOV, it's true that i have it blow off to the atmosphere (will change it soon after i get my new piping done)...at least not the problem i am experiencing right now. the BOV problem happens when you rev the engine pretty high and just let go, occasionally, the engine stalls.
but like i said, i am pretty sure it's the AAC valve that needs adjusting and i want to know how do i know if i have it on the right setting....probably need to get on a dyno to see though..?
just letting you guys know that even with recirculating the BOV, you can still get a very loud blow off if you get the Greddy BOV, it allows you to return the blowoff and makes a nice loud sound.
also, if you dont want to get new bov or if you dont want to recirculate the blowoff, all you have to do is to tighten the BOV and make sure it doesnt stay open for too long and that should solve your stalling problem.
any help would be appreciated. thanks
sr20detutah 01-09-2002, 03:36 PM You mention that you can tighten the BOV. How do you do that? I have mine recirculating and the car idles fine, but sometimes if I rev it up and then let off the throttle it stalls and other times it nearly stalls.
Thanks for any help.:)
G22DET 01-09-2002, 03:52 PM it depends on the BOV that you get, i have a blitz dual drive one.
anyway....i need some response...is anyone experiecning the minor problems that i am having right now?
CharlieH98 01-09-2002, 04:15 PM G22DET:
The BOV opens on vacuum pressure, so it is open at idle. It will cause stalling if not routed back thru the turbo. Disconnect the line to it to be sure. If that's not the problem, I'd suspect the wiring harness to the ECU. What year ECU did JWT use for your ride? Did you pull any error codes off the ECU? Good luck with it and.....
Cheers,
Charlie :)
b-b00gie 01-09-2002, 04:24 PM Luke, how about taking it back to Shaggy? :D
sr20detutah 01-09-2002, 05:26 PM G22det - I think I am having the same problem as you. If I rev mine about 4000 rpm and then let off the throttle it will sometimes stall. My car idles fine.
I have a BB SR20det, stock BOV(recirculating into the intake), and a 98 ECU reprogrammed by JWT for the BB engine. I do pull a check engine code. The code is for the secondary O2 sensor but I've replaced it and know that there is a signal coming from the sensor. Ocassionally the check engine light will go out for a few thousand miles and then randomly come back on.
If anyone has some answers that would be great.

you're talking about Biggie (Chris Parker, SR20development). Shaggy is Chris Allen from importprojects.com and is really good friends with Biggie. Shaggy is the guy with the 497whp 200SX GTiR that SR20development had a major hand in building. If you saw Shaggy about a year or two ago, you would know why he was called shaggy (he had hair just like Shaggy from scoobie doo) Biggie's nickname originated from his massive cranium and partly from his GTiR equipped Sentra E model (Big-E), though nobody really knows why this nickname started, it just kinda did.

b-b00gie 01-09-2002, 10:39 PM LOL... I always do that! :D
G22DET 01-11-2002, 02:08 AM yeh, i'll take it back to him soon...it's just that i know this is very minor problem and dont know if it's worth the 2hr drive! yikes!!! haha
