Could I steal some of my daughters clay out of her craft box and use it instead? It is kind of steep to buy the Meguiers/Mothers claybar when regular clay feels the same and can be had for 1/4 the price.

I think they are two different types of "Clay". The clay bar wont come apart easily. But childrens clay will and it will also smear if you rub it onto somthing

Ditch the mothers and pick up clay magic. It is 100 times easier to use.

Honestly I have used all 3 and I think Clay Magic is hands down the best. I can clay my car in an hour and I mean the entire car. It is not picky and does not like to stick or pull. Not to mention the lubricant is not as messy as the others.

I hate when that crap sticks. When I run out of lubricant I just use water, gets the job done I guess. Maybe thats why it sticks more haha.

We use Dynomite or Claymore or something along those lines at work. It works like a charm.

Throw the mothers bars away. They aren't aggressive at all. You cannot use your kids clay on paint. They are 2 totally different types of clay. Go with claymagic or Meguiars body shop line detailing clay.

I like my Zaino bar, it does not stick or streak at all, and picks up tooons of trash in the paint.

I use the 3M Professional clay bar. I bought it at an auto body supply shop called Finishmasters, they are a chain out here in Southern California, possibly in other parts of the country as well. The 3M clay came in a canister, about the size of a jar of jam, with twice as much clay as you receive from any of the auto parts store packages. Total cost was about $20. I also picked up a gallon of the lubricant, but you can just use any soapy water. I know a detail guy who uses a garden sprayer with a drop or two of liquid dishwashing detergent (he says Lemon Joy works best).

Thanks to everyone for reminding me to clay and wax my car. I am way too lazy when it comes to paint maintenance. I do have a cabinet full of polishes, wazes, clay bars, etc... I just rarely use them.

dont home dish soap unless u want to strip all the wax from the car.

You should be fine with home dish soap, since you'll be waxing immediately after the claybar...

The claybar does that anyway.

Anyone ever try one of the buffer clay pad attachments?

I've never clayed my car, but I plan to... along with compounding, polishing, glazing, and waxing in an attempt to bring some shine back to the crappy look of the NX. I have the 3M clay kit they were giving away awhile back - is that one worth using?

no, the clay bar just takes all of the junk regular washing won't take off your paint, compunding will actually take a small amount of the dead paint off the car.

Exactly. Compounding will in essence take the top layer of clear, and burn it off. That is why when you compound, you remove fine scratches, etc. Claying removed the contaminents that are imbedded in the paint.
