: Places to have motor rebuilt
Justin R 01-11-2002, 12:05 PM I am thinking about rebuilding the motor in my '91 turbo SE-R and haven't decided whether I want to do it myself. So my question is, where are there good, reputable shops that can do a rebuild for me? I basically just want to have forged pistons installed, bearings replaced, maybe a mild port and polish job on the head, etc. I would like to get an idea of how much this would cost. Any suggestions, with phone numbers or websites, are appreciated. Thanks.
Justin

Justin R 01-14-2002, 09:04 AM JWT doesn't do rebuilds. I called them last week and was told they don't rebuild motors. They just do block and headwork from what I know.
Anywhere else?

I am assuming you want someone to physically take out your motor, disassemble it, do the machine work, reassemble it and put it back in your car?
That will cost a pretty penny!
It will be a lot cheaper if you plan on just sending the motor to someone and having them disassemble, machine, balance, and reassemble the motor and then ship it back to you.
I know Rosen Motorsports builds SR20's. Hell, If you want I can build you a motor and ship it to you, but it will take time and cost you!
What exactly are you looking at doing? N/A, Nitrous, or Turbo?????

No, I would remove the motor from the car myself and ship it out. I know that having a rebuild done will cost me. I just wanted to get some ideas about how much it would cost.
I may just attempt to do it myself. I would send the block out for machine work and possibly the head. I want to build the motor for turbo. I am running a Hot Shot kit with T3 turbo. I just want to put some forged pistons in, new bearings, etc. Last spring I did a compression test and my numbers were kind of low and I believe my rings are going. I could just run the motor I have to see if it goes but if it does, than that would mean more downtime in the summer when I actually get to drive my car since it is put away for the winter. I'm trying to get ideas of what to do.

Well, then......
I could have a bottom end put together for you. If you are looking at producing less than 400 whp, then you can still use the factory rods, mate them to some forged pistons and you can have a pretty bullet proof block.
Are you looking at keeping the factory bore? If so, Wiseco make some pretty nice pistons. They are 9.0:1 CR. We put these pistons in Ryan Nielson's 1998 Sentra SE Turbo. The car made 363 whp with these pistons. They are great for the street; very responsive. If you are serious about doing this, let me know. I can get the machine work done locally and ship it to you once it is finished.
Justin R 01-14-2002, 07:03 PM Are the Wiseco pistons available in 87mm? I kind of wanted to bore the block a little but I guess I don't necessarily have to. 9.0:1 is the compression ratio that I want to go with and yes, I would stick with the stock rods. How much do these pistons go for?

You will need to have access to a Torque plate in order to bore the motor 1mm. The Wiseco pistons are $515.00 + shipping.
CNibbana 01-14-2002, 08:43 PM Justin,
There are tons of places all over that do good engine work. The problem is, most of them are used to dealing with big blocks and will take a little convincing to work on a 4 cylinder.
I took my last SR20DE into a local shop where the guy does full race cars and he completely rebuilt the motor with JE Pistons, Crower Rods, cams, headwork, springs, stress relieved the crankshaft and other parts all for $1000. When I left he had a new respect for performance 4 cylinders.
I suggest you tell them to adhere to the FSM clerance guidelines though. They tend to want to go a little "looser" based on experience with big blocks.
Good luck!
