As most of you know, I was getting pretty bad gas mileage and I recently failed emissions. Three of my spark plug boots were covered in oil, so I figured, that I was getting a bad spark. Well after installing valve cover gaskets, and changing my O2 sensor, I decided to go over the timing one more time. Here is my question... Where is 15*? This is what my pulley looks like. I just need to make sure i'm getting this right. Thanks in advance. My indicator lines up where the 15 should be...

So is it labeled like this? I have six lines

| 0 | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 |

If this is incorrect, can someone please let me know. I was on the pass side of the engine when I checked the timing (is that correct?). Ever since this, I've been getting normal gas mileage.

if i am not mistaken, each line represents the denomination of the timing mark. The first line is -5, the second line is 0, the third line is 5, the 4th line is 10, the 5th line is 15, and the 6th line is 20 degrees. i think that the 5th and 6th lines are also slightly thicker to indicate that they are in fact the 15 and 20 degree timing marks. However, it probably differs by car.

For example, on my friend's 1992 NX2000 (NismoNX2000), his 15 and 20 degree marks were a little thicker. On my 91 SE-R, all the lines looked exactly the same.

either way, by your picture you have drawn, It looks like you are off of stock spec by 3-5 degrees. That shouldn't make you fail emmissions or decrease your gas mileage. For that, I speak from experience. Here in NJ at least, I passed inspection and also got 27-30MPG when my timing was at 5 degrees. The only thing I noticed about going to 19 degrees was an extra kick by my SOTP, and a few tenths of a second on my Gtech meter.

Good luck

I'm sorry if I was un clear. When I failed emissions, I was near 17* and was getting bad mileage. Recently I changed the timing to what I thought was 15*. I have been getting better mileage since I turned it down. I just need to be sure i'm in the right spot.
