: Engine heat
1BAD_NX 01-24-2002, 05:19 PM Is it just me or is DETs supposed to be much hotter than DEs? I just got my BB DET with fmic installed and I'm noticing that the engine gets real hot before the car is even driven. When I say hot I mean the temp needle is normal but when the hood is up, I feel heat which I never noticed when I had my DE.
Anyone noticed that or do I need to check my shit out?
thepep 01-24-2002, 09:37 PM Some people that have turboed there NXs have had overheating issues due to a small frontal area (as compared to the Sentras) that is exposed to the radiator.
Those with overheating issues put hood scoops on I believe.
Steve
1BAD_NX 01-25-2002, 08:29 AM Is that true even with a front mounted intercooler? I'd hate to cut holes on my hood, but I'm only on stock boost and it gets real hot before I even run the damn car.
thepep 01-25-2002, 10:25 AM Yeah, I believe even more so because it blocks the radiator. The NX front end doesn't have that extra grill opening like the Sentras do.
Steve
1BAD_NX 01-25-2002, 11:52 AM I guess I'll be putting holes on the bumper soon
Thanks for the inputs guys,
Nick
Sr20 B12 01-25-2002, 01:53 PM DEt's do run some what hotter than the DE. I always though it was because it's running more fuel, but I don't know. And I though I heard that the NX have a smaller radiator than the Se-r for the front bumper clearance. Is this true?
I belive that Nissan Motorsports used to sell GTi-R radiators but I don't know where you can get them now.

Actually I think we have the same size radiator but the difference is the opening on the front bumper in the se-r is bigger and they have a different metal bumper which makes it somewhat easier for an intercooler. I ended up taking out the whole metal bumper to install my IC. And the IC is right in front of the radiator blocking all air going to it(and thats why my engine bay is really hot) .
SE-Rious B14 01-26-2002, 05:40 PM Yea, after having my car back for a while now, i am noticing how the temp needle tends to rise while freeway driving. This sucks, because while in a race at about 4th gear is when the temp really rises. I also am boosting stock psi, also after about a good 20 miles of just cruising on the highway in 5th, the needle rises to about 75% and really puts me on edge. I took out the thermostat and flushed the radiator out a few days ago. So if anybody can help us out with suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated...thanks!
Rocketman 01-26-2002, 11:37 PM When I say hot I mean the temp needle is normal but when the hood is up, I feel heat which I never noticed when I had my DE.
radiated heat under the hood will be a lot higher than a DE yes.
If you are standing in front of the car with the hood open than the heat you feel will be a lot more in front of a DET than a DE.
There is a nice little turbo hanging out right there in front that is soaking up and radiating a lot more heat than your average exhaust manifold would.
If the guage stays in the normal range i wouldn't worry to much. Just be sure to always cool the car down after running and keep your eyes on the temp gauge.
Rick
1BAD_NX 01-27-2002, 09:42 AM Thanks Rocketman, I think you're right. I'm gonna be installing a couple of temp gauges(probably water and oil)soon. I think those might work better than the factory ones we have on the dash.
silversx 01-27-2002, 05:46 PM i could have sworn that the NX has a good radiator, thicker than the sentra se-r..
Rockwood 01-27-2002, 06:20 PM And I though I heard that the NX have a smaller radiator than the Se-r for the front bumper clearance. Is this true?
the NX has a thicker core than the sentra.
the Nismo radiator has a nice thick core, and is more efficient as a heat exchanger, i would recommend getting this radiator before cutting holes to see if it works, it is a simple bolt on affair. or you could try the Koyo radiator, not sure about the price but is a really nice unit, probably the best one available for our cars, purty too!
another option is to try some water whetter and the 300ZX radiator cap, it raises the boiling point of your coolant by raising pressure in your radiator, resisting overheating more.
if you want to get the NISMO radiator, or the Z cap, give Greg Vogel a call at (760)720-9797, and ask for greg vogel, parts manager. he gives a SERCA discount.
RacerX 01-27-2002, 06:29 PM The NX core is bigger than the SE-R core, not by much (8% ?) but it has less airflow to it.
I had the same problem with my DET NX too.... I put a new temp sender (for the gauge) in and it works fine.... I also have one fluidyne fan to replace the dr side factory one. Also make sure you bleed all the air out of the cooling system too.....
Hope this helps.
1BAD_NX 01-27-2002, 09:20 PM Thanks for the advise guys, I just went for a 2 hour highway drive and the car did fine with stock boost. So I'll wait around till I get my boost controller before I do anything to it.
Welcome to the world of Turbo. Not only do you get more heat put off from the engine, you get less gas milage.
I can attribute the heat coming from the recirculation of the exhaust gases back in to the engine and NOT ENOUGH AIR circulating over the engine.
Think of it as a sauna, the heat is there in the room(aka your engine bay) and no where to go until the door (aka your hood) is opened. There is no escaping this heat other than so tricks.
1) rewire your stock fans to be running all the time the car is on.
2)buy aftermarket fans(they sell larger stronger ones).
3)get a better flowing radiator
4)cut holes in your hood or the side body panels to let out the heat.
5) Heat wrap your engine
6)Ghetto rig a psuedo cold air vent thru your fog lights. (costs about $10 and 1hr of time) but you lose the fog lights.
I know many people want to be stealthy but whats more important your looks or the health of your car. If it is getting as hot as you say think about the overall negative affect of the heat. It can cause oil burn off, wiring to become baked, more stress on the turbo and an overall lack of performance.
Another note GET AN EGT/BOOST/ TURBO TIMER, they will be your best friends.
Y do you think subaru puts all those beautiful hood scoops on their cars? They run hot....
1BAD_NX 01-27-2002, 11:28 PM GC8 you've made some nice pointers about the fans. I've been thinking about replacing the stock fans also. And I already took out my foglights so that's helping out a good deal at cooling things down.
Gas mileage is real shitty on my car since my 02 sensor is almost dead( I barely get 200miles mixed driving) but thats also due to my erratic idle problems that Im still trying to fix
BoostedSleeper 01-29-2002, 07:21 PM When you do replace your O2 sensor, let me know which one you use! The one for a sentra or 200sx se-r doesn't fit in the hole where the BB one is, its too large to fit in....anyone have any ideas on this? Also are you running the BB ecu on your swap?
-David
1BAD_NX 01-29-2002, 09:36 PM the Nx o2 sensor should work since thats what Im using on my DET now. the only thing is that you'll have to extend the wires for the sensor. I'll be getting one as soon as I get $130(thats what the dealership quoted for the Nx one)
I wasn't aware that the se-r O2 sensor didnt fit in the DET?? any comments guys???
BTW, Im not running BB ecu. I got the JWT turbo program.
