: SR20DE- Avg Life Span?
ATLANTICBLUE 01-25-2002, 05:33 AM Im actually looking at 200SXs, but since ure cars are older i assume you will have some of the highest miliage SR20s on the board. How much miles have some of you guys racked up on a stock or slightly modded SR20 , driving it fairly hard, taking it to the track the odd time but for the most part babying it? When have your SR20s gone bad, at what miliage and what problem???
Reason im asking is Im looking at a 95, with 74,000 miles (all records, oil changes done religiously) and want to estimate how much life is left in the car.
Loe Lyf 01-25-2002, 07:13 AM 182,000 kms and runs better every day!! I love this motor!!:D
Just change the oil regularly, run good gas, and always make sure your oil level is full.

LOL, post in the Classic forum so the Canadian guys with NX2000s can respond...
My NX2000 has been to numerous track days where I rag on it without mercy.
It just hit 200,000 kms last weekend, and it pumping out a healthy peak 142.8 hp @ the wheels, and running just fine.
SERprise In WV 01-25-2002, 08:32 AM 151,000 miles, over 100 nitrous-assisted dragstrip passes, about 30-some autocrosses.
I've never seen the pistons, pulled the valve cover once, to paint it.
No smoke, nothing. As the others said...just make sure you have your oil topped up and you're good to go for a long, long time.
Incredibly resilient engine.
kpw97 01-25-2002, 08:34 AM Mine has 113k miles without an engine problem. I don't take it to the track all that often. But it does get a sound beating regularly:D
Also, there are many of these cars with over 200k miles on them, still running good numbers on the dyno. A few even have 300k+ miles. I think it's safe to say that they last a good amount of time.
lance 01-25-2002, 08:51 AM Mine has 184,000 miles on the clock- still completely original. Doesn't use any oil and has never broken down. I've replaced the battery, alternator (both at 170,000), and the chain tensioner and that's it. Still has the original clutch and exhaust system, even. It sees at least 6,000 rpm every day and often over 7,000. Regular maintenence is the key.
keithert 01-25-2002, 09:34 AM My NX runs well with 104,000 miles. I just got a Tazzo and have been doing 0-60 and 1/4 mile runs a lot in the last few days. I only do it when the engine is good and warmed up. But I still wonder if I am hurting the engine. I've heard of people having rod knocks with our engine's. I wonder what causes that.
jacen99SE 01-25-2002, 10:49 AM 267420 miles and time for another oil change!
silversx 01-25-2002, 11:06 AM sitting in the middle of 183k right now with my 93 NX2K. i drive it hard, i'll admit. still runs good. had it on the dyno a while back, 117 hp/tq - that was stock except for a place racing warm air setup, 15" rims, hole in exhaust, and god knows how old the dist. cap, rotor, and wires were at the time i got on there..i got home and changed the cap and rotor after the run, they looked shitty! all i know is, i love my egg :D i change the oil every 3k, no doubt. got to maintain your car. the SR20 is a good engine.

That engine's probably 1/4 of the way through it's life. SR20s are bulletproof, just keep up the excellent maintenance.
sr20deMike 01-25-2002, 12:03 PM 92,000 miles and regular mobil one oil changes and routine maintence. Been to the track a few times and plan to start up autocrossing in the spring.

Oh I will, you're talking to the guy who changes oil every 1500-2000K miles when i feel guilty for beating on my cars. :( Its all to easy to do it yourself in the garage!
Zak91SER 01-25-2002, 01:21 PM keithert: low oil causes rod knock. Don't run low on oil and you should be fine. And yes, the SR20DE was designed to run hard, so run it hard. It can take an unbelievable amount of abuse. In fact, my theory is that if you don't run it hard, your oil passages will slowly start getting blocked up. Redline it at least once a day.
My engine had 115k miles on it when I turbocharged it, I expect to get another 100k miles out of it. And at 115k miles, it dynoed at 131 wheel HP with only an ECU and air filter. Very strong motor.
Teal97 01-25-2002, 02:28 PM 126k on my 97. 40 or 50 trips down the 1/4 mi. , some lapping events and auto-x's, the only parts that have been replaced, that weren't replaced for upgrade reasons :-):-) were the rear hubs. that was at ~100k.

Funny you should say that. I have dealer maintenance records from the previous owner that pretty much say the same thing. The previous owners only drove it 3-5000 miles a year and were complaining about rough running. The service manager pretty much told them to get the injectors and TB cleaned and DRIVE IT!
I'm putting ~15,000 happy miles a year on mine. Many of them turned in anger on the race track :)
Driven97 01-25-2002, 03:18 PM I've got 99,000 miles of me. That's about 200,000 of normal people. I redline my car a dozen times a day minimum. Autocross, drag, and even some track events too. Example of how hard I am on the car:
Two broken stock exhaust manifolds
Stock clutch down to rivets @ 70,000 miles
I'm on my eighth set of tires
In 1 (track) day, wore brand new brake pads to backing plates, and cracked both front rotors.
NEVER an engine problem. Just a noisy starter. ;) Car does not consume oil, idles smooth, and revs like a dream.
seralex 01-26-2002, 01:45 AM had 208k hard driven miles before i finally put a hole in the block
Peanuthead 01-26-2002, 09:04 AM I had 203K on stock motor before the rod came through the side of the block. My friend owned the car at the time and he used the cheap Supertech oil and he thinks that is what did it.
Stirpicult 01-26-2002, 01:46 PM mine had somewhere near 140-150k on it before i sent a rod out the side of it, though i'm almost positive that this was a 'fluke' of sorts.
