: i might be heading to pittsburgh, anyone there?
jeffinbham 07-13-2005, 04:59 PM i may be doing something erratic and spontaneous that will land me in shady side, or shadyville, or something along those lines. i met a girl a couple of months ago who is heading to grad school in pittsburgh, and i might just follow her there. i really don't have anything going on in birmingham, besides school, and i can finish that there. just wanted to see if anyone on here was in that area, and what your general thoughts on the city were. thanks- jeff
paNX2K&SE-R 07-13-2005, 07:26 PM Hi Jeff there are a few of us that live around the 'burgh. I think you are talking about Shadyside which is a pretty cool and unique neighborhood. Its sort of a mix of semi ghetto, upscale yuppie, and college kids within a few square miles. I went to Pitt and had lots of friends that lived there and its a fun area. Let me know if you have any other questions.
jeffinbham 07-14-2005, 03:02 PM where are all the bars at? are they concentrated in a certain area of town? i don't like yuppy bars with couches and stuff, i like dirty bars with pinball machines and jukeboxes and such. also, about how much of the year is it snowing, and how are the mass transit sytems? do ya'll (i guess i'll have to start saying you's guys) have a subway system, or is it just buses?
paNX2K&SE-R 07-14-2005, 04:16 PM There are some kick-ass bars around shadyside and pittsburgh in general. In shadyside there are yuppie bars (yuck) and regular fun bars (woohoo!). It can snow starting in October (like once n the last 15 years) through April (this year, the first time I ever remember and I've been here since '86). Generally we get 10-12 1"-5" snow "storms" a year and its normally only on the ground a few days before it melts. If you drive 100 miles north they get hammered by the lake effect stuff.
We have a decent bus system if you live close to the city. There is a light rail that goes from the city from the south burbs but you prob won't have a need to ride it.
You's guys is eastern pa, yinz guys is pittsburghese :)
jeffinbham 07-14-2005, 05:08 PM i most certainly will still be rocking the "ya'll". so YA'LL can just laugh at me. i don't care. sounds like a decent city, i've never lived anywhere with snow, i heard it will tear up your car. i guess i will make sure to get all my bare metal taken care of if this happens. do you know anything about music going on up there? is there a pretty big punk/hardcore/metal scene?
Ricer_X_01 07-18-2005, 02:29 AM you'll probably enjoy the south side area. then theres station square and the strip district which are your more up beat 'clubbin' type atmosphere.
my grandparents and aunt actually live in shadyside. its a pretty nice area, but there is some ghetto parts of it.
and the main thing you wanna watch out for in all of pittsburgh is, POTHOLES everywhere! its like driving on a damn obstacle course in my car.
as for snow, it can get pretty bad sometimes and the salt definitly takes its toll on the cars. you may want to invest in a cheap reliable beater for winter, a 4x4 is key.

jeffinbham 07-26-2005, 12:20 AM i heard the city has wireless internet access. as in, if you have a wireless reciever, there is a signal for you to pick up just about anywhere in the city. we have some parks that transmit wireless signal, but it's only for about a mile radius.
jeffinbham 08-02-2005, 01:20 PM any local pittsburgh car forums?
paNX2K&SE-R 08-02-2005, 01:38 PM www.pittspeed.com (pretty much sucks) and www.racepa.com (pretty good)
jeffinbham 08-02-2005, 01:53 PM thanks. i have pretty much finalized my relocation. i still feel like a chump following a girl to another state, but hell, she's a catch. i figure it will be no prob for me to relocate and finish my undergrad shit. and she shouldn't stick around here for me if she can go to grad school and get her doctorate (sp).
paNX2K&SE-R 08-02-2005, 02:22 PM Yeah man just let us know when you make it up here. It looks like from all the recent posts that Pittsburgh is going to be the next SE-R hotspot :)
jeffinbham 08-02-2005, 02:40 PM /\/\ word. i'm there around the begining of next year. maybe one of yall has a passenger door for a 200sx. or a front bumper.
jeffinbham 09-01-2005, 04:42 PM got back from pittsburgh on monday, and i have 3 words for you: dollar yuengling pints. everywhere. i got to oakland at 10:30 am, met with my girl for about five minutes before she had to go back to work, and told her i was going to explore. walked across the street and up a block, and found this place called boomerangs. the sign said 1$ yuengling, so i had to investigate. low and behold, it was true. i stayed there till she had her lunch break around 1:30, and she comes over and says "you CAN'T sit here and drink all day. you have to leave. you don't know your way around the city, and you're drunk." so i had a couple more beers and took the 71d back to shadyside, dropped my stuff off at her place, and walked to the golden eagle and hitched a ride to the beer distributor with a nittany, which was a totally new experience, but fun. pittsburgh is the shit. everyone is all about drinking, and no one gets offended at anything you say. i also looked at some apts. in bloomfield, i think that's where i'm going to stay.
