Your in Tennessee too right? Don't worry about it, everything is legal here. Heck, do you guys even have to pass smog tests in knoxville? I know nashville does, but out here in the sticks I don't.

What makes it illegal? Emissions? Anyone know if it's illegal in Maryland? I'm NA for now, but someday...:rolleyes:

the motor would automatically fail on the visual inspection at a smog station....but there's ways around that :cool:

I love hearing what you guys in CA go through. Out here, smog, sniffer, visual inspection, what are they? 17 dollars a year for a new sticker to put on the license plate and that's it.

In some states, excluding CA, the only law when doing an engine swap is that the engine you put in must be the same year or newer.

Even EGR is not a federal law, so I've been told. EGR is just the way Nissan tries to satisfy the U.S. regulations, but its really a bunch of crap. I have an emissions test every year here in Salt Lake City(not as bad as CA) and I pass emissions with flying colors with my BB sr20det. I have compared the emissions of my NA engine with the DET and they are almost exactly the same. The DET burns a little cleaner on one of the emissions and a bit dirtier on the other. When I did my engine swap one of the key issues was to make it OBDII compliant and emissions legal. I was a bit afraid at first but after getting the smog test done I realize that it will pass in most states without a problem. Visual is different. I passed here in Utah, but I don't know how hard they looked around or how that is in other states.

Most people don't realize that the cat takes care of somewhere around 90 percent of emissions. EGR is just a bunch of crap in my opinion.

SR20DETUTAH,
Do they measure NOx in Utah? This is what the EGR reduces.
The 3-way catalyst also helps reduce NOx.

Here in an 'enhanced' smog county in Calif, they dyno your engine and measure emissions at 15 and 25 (or 35?) MPH, and load down the engine depending on the vehicle weight and class.
This is to measure how bad the NOx content is.

Yes!! each year my car is put on a dyno, weighed, and a bunch of things are measured at 15 and 25 mph. NOx is one of the emissions meassured and my DET passes at above the average, but still well below the max allowed.

@ 15 mph- 253 PPM NOx(max allowed=1040)
@ 25 mph- 590 PPM NOx(max allowed= 950)

I know that the max allowed must me lower in Cali, but most other states are not going to be much worse that Salt Lake City.

Do you know what the Hydro Carbs and CO2 were for your bluebird? I'm considering the same swap and that's what they test for in Illinois.

%CO2 = 14.9% @ 15 MPH
%CO2 = 15.0% @ 25 MPH
HC = 24 PPM @ 15 MPH
HC = 35 PPM @ 25 MPH

Hope this helps you out.

I noticed many of you mentioned that CA laws are different. What exactly makes the DET illegal in CA?
