: New 1994 SE-R owner

Hey Everybody,

I'm happy to announce that I'm a proud, new SE-R owner. I picked up a red (Aztec Red???) 94 SE-R w/ 68k miles for $4k tonight. It's going to be my "new" daily commuter car replacing my 90 Chevy Lumina that threw a rod a couple of weeks ago.

The paint has a few chips and I'll have to replace a few things (cracked foglamp lens, driver-side visor, driver-side seat skin), but I'm stoked about the low mileage.

I've been researching classic SE-R's ever since I saw the ad in Autotrader and I must admit that I'm impressed w/ them. At first glance, it seems more fun & challenging to drive than my 300ZX, but, then again, I feel MUCH safer in my Z. :)

Alas, I gotta resist the temptation to mod the SE-R. I keep telling myself that it's my daily commuter so it needs to last me another 80k miles, but it's sooo hard. After I perform a basic engine tune-up this weekend, I'll probably bump the ignition timing to 19 degrees after a few tanks of Chevron 93 octane. The intake and ECU may follow...

Anyway, does anybody have any words of wisdom they'd like to share w/ an SE-R virgin? :)

Cheers!

Michael.

Welcome to the gang. My only words of wisdom are to change your oil like your life depends on it and take care of her and she will take care of you. Once again congrats and what a great find.

The Classic is a fantastic car, but it's a rotten commuter.

Car & Driver once said:

"Even if you have all day to get from point A to point B, the SE-R will have you driving as if you were running very late."

So true. A stock SE-R is high strung direct from the factory. With mods, it's a ticket waiting to happen.

What you can do right now is yank the three-prong, noise-deadening intake pipe that connects to the airbox and resonator. Instant gratification at WOT.

You have a TTZ and an SE-R. What the hell are you doing on the forums!?!?! Go DRIVE your cars!!! (or let me do it for you :) )

Welcome to the Classic.

The modding bug will hit you --oh, yes it will-- and your original statement will not be true in the coming months. This is a good thing.

Last another 80k miles? At 68k, your SE-R is just getting warmed up. We didn't start using nitrous until the 146,000 mile mark on my '93.

With religious oil changes (keep it right at the 'full' mark at all times), regular replacement of maintenance items (pcv, spark plugs, etc.), and some TLC, your SE-R will go waaaay beyond 150k while being revved to 7,500rpm every day.

And you will rev it.

Do those things, add mods as you see fit, and you'll have the time of your life.

michael, lemme guess, the car you bought was in coppell/lewisville, right off 121? I live like 2 min from there and saw that baby drivin one day so i followed him back to his house, and drove that baby.... very nice, i tried to get my friend to buy it, but he could never get in touch with the guy.... good pick man! as far as mods go, for $450, i picked up a mildly used place racing cold air intake, a NEW pacesetter header, and NEW pacesetter 2.25" catback, and they made a TON of difference. awesome bang for the buck. man, that car was cherry inside

Thanks for all of the warm words guys. Playa, yup, that's the SE-R. The owner/guy actually remembers you two and told me about it -- he wasn't aware of the SE-R "cult following" and found that to be interesting. Anyway, I saw the ad on Autotrader a few days ago, but figured it was too good to be true because of the lack of details. So after I got tired of driving beat 90-93 Maximas w/ super-high mileage and Honda/Acuras that took forever to wind up, I gave it a shot and e-mailed the owner. And the rest is... history. :)

If I can get my SE-R to put down somewhere in the 150rwhp range w/ just bolt-ons, then I'll be severely happy. That should put it at 180fwhp w/ a 15% drivetrain loss and up to par w/ the new SE-R Vspec and other competitors in its class. Not too shabby.

One of the things that I've always wanted to do is hit the roadtrack. I've wanted to take the Z, but always been hesitant (topic for another story). Needless to say, I will probably take the SE-R instead. On that note, I've got a short story to tell: when I went to Texas World Speedway w/ a friend some time ago, there was a guy in the garage next to us w/ a classic SE-R (or a Nissan Tsuru???) from Guatemala (the guy was from there). After the last run of the day, the guy, Mario, pulled into his garage spot and I started helping him change his tires until another gentleman came up to us and asked who was driving the Nissan. To my amazement, this gentleman was in a Porsche Boxster and he was giving Mario kudos for sticking on him like glue -- the guy could not shake Mario. To my further amazement, Mario's Nissan was completely stock except for track tires.

Then again, to his credit, Mario is an awesome driver as his other "track car" is a 993 Turbo. :)

Cheers!

Michael.

If you dont already know about it, www.se-r.net is a great site for information on SE-R's.

Welcome!

also go to www.yahoogroups.com and do a search for SERCA and join the mailing lists, there are a good number of SR20 pilots in your area.

150hp bolt-on, you say?

PlanoSER hit 148hp in his 200SX. all he has is cone filter, pacesetter header, courtey nissan catback, intake cam from 1991-1993 SR20DE, and 19* timing

My plan is probably HS header, PR Catback, plus what I already got... hopefully that'll get me in the 145whp range, with drivetrain loss I'll be looking at around 170hp at the crank with this setup.. not too bad for N/A with 9.5:1 compression...

If not.. JWT ECU and S4 cams are next :D

Another red beast, LOL. Man, ever since I picked this car up, I've been noticing more SE-R's on the road. Then again, that happens w/ every car that I've owned. :D

I've got my ignition timing set to 19 degrees and I'm picking up an intake today (hopefully) from Vince. Future mods will be JWT ECU, 91-93 intake cam, and headers. I'll probably stick w/ the stock exhaust since this is my daily commuter.

Oh yeah, when these tire wear out, I'll probably get new wheels. I've got my eyes set on ASA EM9's from tirerack.com.

BTW, does anybody know if running the JWT ECU @ 17 degrees will put more to the ground than running a stock ECU @ 19 degrees?

Thanks.

Michael.

If I remember correctly, the JWT ECU should only be used at 15 degrees.

There are lots of cams on sale in the "For Sale" forum.
Chrissy has a GREAT one for $70. DIRT CHEAP!!!

I believe 19 is too much with the JWT ECU. I am running the JWT ECU with 17 right now, really most people would say do 15 with the ECU. However, I have no dyno results, and I have never tried 19 because it would scare me.

If you do decide to get an exhaust and you want to keep it as quiet and stock looking as possible, get the HKS. All the DFW guys will back me up on this, it is stealthy. Most people didn't even think I had an aftermarket exhaust when I had that on my classic.

Welcome! I've spent a track day with a bunch of Porche guys in my 200sx (not quite as good as a Classic) and really, REALLY surprised them. And that BMW M roadster driver that had to wave me by... Great cheap little cars.

If you want to drive on the track, I strongly reccommend trying out Autocrossing (AutoX for short) first. ALL of my driving skills have come from it. It's lower wear on the car, lower risk, and has a better learning curve. Plus, it's way cheaper. I'm sure you can find a local school where you'll have a very good instructor for $25. And you can even usually borrow a helmet.

I had about three years of AutoX under my belt the first time I went to the roadcourse, and I found the track driving much less challenging. I was -flying- on my second lap. What fun!

Melt darn snow!

Oh yeah, and my intake is much louder than my straight through exhaust. What a wonderful sound though. Enjoy!

i wish my 94 had 68K but instead i have 102K, well it runs just as good either way. My car has seen more redlines than red lights.
