Don't you all think it would be cheaper to get an SR20DET from a Blue Bird put into a 93 Se-R. The engine is aobut $2K and install it about $700. The HotShot kit is around $3300. Is it me or is something wrong with this pic? Also the SR20DET has all the good internals already like the Oil cooled pistons, etc.

This is just a question, but please let me know if I am missing the big picture????

Probably cause this question has been asked too many times...

It boils down to your final HP goal and the condition of your engine. Did you maintain it well? Low miles?

If you are going to be happy with 200 to 230whp, then a DET may be a good swap if you have a high milage DE. A DET will only need a little bit of tweaking to get to 225whp

If you are planning on a lot more HP then the DET may just be an overhead cost. You will have to install the DET and then pay for upgrades when you could have just gotten a better turbo kit to begin with and saved money.

BTW you will pay more than $2700 for the DET... are you getting a front mount IC? you'll need piping made also. Between that you are now at the price of a FMAX or HS turbo kit which will put out more HP.

You may also want to concider getting the DET turbo parts and putting them on your DE. You'll save some money. Andreas Miko has this stuff available all the time from what I've seen...

i was thinking that myself but chances are that when you buy a jspec motor it may not have that much mileage.(20,000-30,000) i have 110,000 miles on mine nx but im like the 2 or 3 owner. if you don't know the past history of your car go for the swap but if you bought your car at low mileage or new you know your motor get the hotshot or fmax kit. its cheaper in the long run but i have to admit it oil coolers stronger bottom end is a plus:D

Thats not true,a leakdown test or compression test should give you a general idea on how well your motor is. Also looking at the cam lobes might not be a great signal but tells if the person before has neglected to change his oil or was maybe low on oil, scouring will show. The bottom end is pretty much the same, and the difference between the 2 are really the same. Cause if you really want more power its actually better to build up the motor like what turbo91ser has now for 1400 and slap a different kit that wont cost that much more to upgrade.

I appreciate your input, I am thinking of getting the HotShot kit, but instead of the Turbonetics T3/04 turbo, I want to put the Garrett on it! Any advice?
