: 91cams to 94 Sproket question
Hello.
I just got my 91 cams in the mail. (to drop into the 94 se-r)
The question is.. The cams came with the cam sprokets attached. When I do the swap all the info that I read says to disconnect the sprocket from the cam and re-bolt the sproket to the 91 cam (and ziptie the chain to the cam so that it holds the chain in place during the swap). With the 91 cams having the sproket installed should I swap out the 94 cam and gear with the 91 cam and gear or unbolt the cam gear from the cam and then unbolt the cam from the 94 and swap? It seems easier to swap out the whole cam and gear without unbolting the gears but I am unsure what to do.
What would you do?
james vick 08-03-2005, 09:04 PM You'll have to take the gear off the cam to install it. The gears are the same.

Ok,
How would you take the gear off the cams that I have (The ones I just got in the mail) ?
I really do not want to put the lobes in the vise and take the air tool to the bolt...
Should I put the gear in the vice and go to town instead?
I read in some previous post that the cam gear bolt is torqued down to like 100# from the factory which I figure would require a little heat and my bench vise to hold it still...
srbybre 08-03-2005, 10:21 PM if you have access to an air compressor just get a big wrench to go on the canshaft right past the first lobe. it looks kinda hexagonal. i think the wrench you need is a 24mm. put the wrench on the hex piece on the cam and use the air gun to loosen the bolt on the cam. dont use heat. the gears are already heat treated and is you heat them up and let them cool in room temp they will soften.
james vick 08-03-2005, 10:22 PM Zip tie the chain to the cam gears in the car and use them. Look at the cams on the gear end and you'll see a place for a 1 inch wrench to hold it to take the gear loose.
SE-Rawkus 08-03-2005, 10:24 PM Just swap out the whole cam w/ gear on it....just make sure that you line up the other gear on the right link.
In other words...mark the dot on the cam gear and also mark the link where it lines up with the dot...get me?

That is kind of what I was thinking..
Mark the link where the dot is on the stocker and switch the whole unit.
Either way,
Now I know how to do it both ways.
Thanks Guys.

Sweet,
I did not see it at first :biggthump . (the hidden 24 mm hex..)
I still do not know what to do  .
Guess I will figure it out when the Vc is off and ready to swap  .
jer_760 08-03-2005, 11:14 PM I still do not know what to do  .
You just put a wrench on the sprocket bolt then the 1" wrench on the camshaft, then righty tighty, lefty loosey. Easy as pie. :biggthump
BTW: I ended up having to get another person to help me break the bolt loose. It was on there pretty good, I think the torque spec is 110ft. lbs
eric96ser 08-03-2005, 11:26 PM Wow, if you don't know how to remove the gear from the cam, good luck with the cam install.

Its not my mechanical skills in question.. I just do not know if I want to swap the whole unit or swap the gears.. I guess I should have made that more clear. I have never cracked the motor on the Se-r, so I did not know what the fwd cam looked like. (the 24 mm hidden hex). I just finished breaking in the Key value kit and 2001 se disk that I installed myself, so the top end should be a piece of cake once I decide what to do :biggthump .

If you mess up a cam swap you might need a new motor ;)
coalitionSE-L 08-04-2005, 12:50 PM Why would you go to the trouble of changing the cam gears? They are the same. When you pull the valve cover, remove the spark plugs as well. Before you remove anything else, turn the engine over until #1 is at TDC, the crank pulley is at 0*, and the DARK chain links line up with the timing marks on the cam sprockets. Remove the tensioner, remove the intake cam bearing caps in proper order, and then pull the intake cam out with sprocket still attached. Put the new cam in, lining up the timing mark on the sprocket with the dark chain link, and tighten her down/re-install the tensioner. You're done. It's a simple install.
jer_760 08-04-2005, 02:40 PM Maybe his new cam didn't come with the sprocket

Yes Yes..
Thanks for your detailed imput.
This is what I will do :biggthump

Just so you know, you do NOT need to swap both cams. Only the intake cam will give you more power, the exhaust cams are all the same.
