Decided I didn't want to wait until the weekend so I undid the old exhaust and put in the Pacesetter catback tonight.

First off, if anyone plans on doing exhaust work, go buy some PB Blaster from NAPA and spray it on the bolts days before. I did and the old exhaust hardware come off easily (even with 152K miles on it). Did break all the bolts on the cat shield but I couldn't spray those.

After installing all the pieces (but leaving all the fasteners loose) I was less than pleased to see how far out the tip extends. It is REALLY far out! (like inches beyond the back bumper). The tip isn't that large in diameter, but the damn thing is too long!

Looking underneath I realized that if I shortened two of the pipes by a smidge, I could move the muffler and tip back. I ended up taking 3" in total off, which moved the muffler 3" back and you can see what I ended up with. A side benefit is the exhaust pipe that goes over the rear links now fits better - the arc was in the way before.

Much better looking!

The sound is droney between 2000-3000 RPM. A bit droney on the freeway buy not too bad. It is definitely louder than stock but I thought the stock setup with completely silent. The sound is not Braaaaapy, or weed eater like. It is a low muffled drone.

Total install time 1hour, 10 minutes
(including removing old exhaust, fitting new exhaust, cutting new exhaust, refitting and tightening.)

One last thing. The slots on the Pacesetter catalytic flange is slotted way too much. Be sure your flange is centered to the cat flange before bolting up. If not, the gasket will block off your pipe.

Now for the pics.
Top right view - no tip sticking out!!

Picture of cutoff pieces (3" total in length). Longer piece is from the pipe that connects to the muffler. Shorter piece is from the pipe that connects to the catalytic.

dude,
nice install! the exhuast looks great with the 3 inches shaved off. i have the same exhaust except mine protrudes an extra 3 inches - looks horrible. anyways, don't know what the inspection process is like out in cali, but mine failed for 'loud exhaust', among other things. looking to put a glasspack in and then possibly changing the entire exhaust can. so if there's anyone (preferably in the jersey area) interested in a used (~8 months old) pacesetter exhaust, please let me know. make a reasonable or unreasonable offer! all will be entertained.

Looks like a clean install dude, good job, but why did they have to make it that nasty yellow color?? oh well, its not bad for the price of the whole catback.

I think the yellow is just Pacesetter's 'signature'.

Drove it to work today - it's annoying. Freeways here the average is 75MPH and at that speed it's drones the whole cabin. There's a slight braaaap at 3200RPM but it then goes away.

On the good side I'll probably get better gas mileage since I'm babying the throttle to keep her quiet.

If I don't get used to it in a few days the stock exhaust is going back in. When I come to a stop light, or put the car in neutral and let it idle - my whole body relaxes when the drone goes away.

Bummer. I was hoping this was a much quieter exhaust.

What about a glasspack or resonator?? Do u have one of those on?? If not, then i would suggest it....i have to do the same thing, im running a 2.25" custom exaust without a resonator and it drones like crazy at highway speeds....above 75 its ok, but thats about it.

Nismo,
The Pacesetter setup has a resonator in it right after the catalytic (baffled type). The muffler is also baffled, and so is the tip.

I went out to lunch today and realized I really hate the noise. The stock exhaust is going in tonight.

Heh, pacesetter makes 'em too long for a reason.... Wait a year and you'll find out why... I'll give ya a hint, you won't have to worry about that yellow tip. :D

I'll take a pic of the remains from the pacesetter on my crx sometime. Quite funny...

you bought a performance cat-back system, and you thought it was going to be quiet? i'd love to hear what you say if you get a cold air intake.

Isn't the Greddy quiet?

If nothing else....that tip becomes a good paperweight after a while. one of the funny stories that go along with that CRX of calum's. Thats the only piece of the pacesetter stuff i wouldnt even think about buying. after seeing Stine's I wouldnt. That tip is just too big, and it being louvered I wouldnt want it. Personaly just a b-pipe and stock muffler. Cant go wrong with the header either, need to get me one sometime. Maybe a tape and paint job with some decently high temp black paint. Either that or hack it off and find something less noticable. but dont worry, it wont be there long :D

I have a Greddy SP on my classic and I think its quiet until you hop on the freeway.

NismoNx2000... about that yellow color, don't worry in no time it'll be black. Unless homeboy is a cleanin freak like I am.

No, the Greddy isn't quiet.

There is a quiet aftermarket exhaust. HKS makes one for the classic that is awesome!! I rave about it all the time, but it simply doesn't make any extra noise. It is a little deeper than stock, but is not louder! Simply Great! HKS!!! :D

Also, it is only a 3" tip, so it doesn't look aftermarket either. :D

Yeah I just got my HKS exhaust on and love it, H K S, H K S, H K S.
You wouldn't even know I had an exhaust and thats the way I like it, just the whale of the intake.

whats the HKS look like? I have yet to see it. I saw it on the B14 and it was rather easily noticeable.

I wish I had a good pic of it. I have one at home somwhere that I will try to put up tonight.

If you look at sleeping 91ser's sig pic, you can sort of see it. It is definitely much less noticeable than the B14 HKS tip.

Okay, I found one decent pic, but it is pretty large, so I will just link to it.

It is 115k!

Please also ignore the stripes on the taillights. I don't own the car anymore, and the stripes are gone. :)
