Does anyone ever replace the timing chain as a preventative measure? Or do you just wait until it goes bad.

I would say the tranny should last alot longer. Until you plant some serious power through it, It should hold up.

My tranny has 120,000 & shifts like new.

i dont think you ever really need to replace your timing chain...I believe you just need to get it adjusted every now and then..

Thats a big no no. You should have the timing chain replaced a 100,000 mi. If it goes kiss you engine goodby "interfearence" bang clack scrape tick clack bang

But there is a 249,000 mile SR20DE motor here in N. Cali running 13.3 with bolt ons and the JWT 50 shot. Original timing chain. Actually that really is a good question..How many of you SR20DE guys have more than 100,000 miles with original chain? To be honest I havn't heard of many (if anyone) that has replaced their timing chain.

Sorry for steering the thread off topic. I didn't read the title well enough before posting. But as long as I have done it already here's another question.:D

How do you adjust the timing chain?

You don't have to / can't adjust the timing chain. There's a spring loaded tensioner that bolts in near where your oil filter is. It's a spring loaded piston thingie (I said thingie) that pushes on the chain to take the slack out of it.

My 82 Honda CB650 has the same type of mechanism, but it does have an adjusting procedure. Is there such a procedure for the SR20?

The timing chain tensioner is spring and hydraulic (there is some kind of oil passage anyway), so it does not need adjustment.

If you wanted to do some preventative maintenance, I would replace the timing chain tensioner. It is not hard or long.

I have 268,000 miles on the original timing chain on my 91 SE-R.

I don;t think u should have to replace nothing except do a major tune up. like oil change, sparkplug and wire, fuelfilter, tranny fluid, and flush radiator.

if you want your tranny to last, make sure you or whoever has access to the transmission drain plug tightens it ALOT:rolleyes: you don't even want to know how shitty the tranny sounds/feels after 50 miles of dry operation.... this is only with 88k on it:mad: well tomorrow chris garrison and i are changing the trans oil, so hoefully it will feel better...

its not a bad idea to change the chain but its no more likly to brake than any other part in you car. now a belt is different. if anything change your tentioner, it only takes about 10 min. just take off the oil filter and undo the 2 bolts that hold on the tentioner, if the seals go out in it than you wont get optimal preasure at high RPMs. i have the orginal chain on my 100,000 sr20de. the tentioner is a really neat part! its the most interesting part on the entire car.
