: high idle???

My BB det normally idles at about 830-840 rpm when the engine's warm, but sometimes even when the engine is warm I'll start it up and it will idle at 1700-1800 rpm! I'll drive aroung town and the idle will stay at 1700-1800. Then when I stop and get back in it, start it up and the idle will be back down to 830 rpm??? Also, when I fill the tank with gas often the idle will bump up to 1700-1800 rpm and stay there for a while. Does anyone else have these idle characteristics? Does anyone know what might be my problem?

Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

Could a deteriorating temp sensor do that? Or the Throttle position sensor?

Could your throttle cable be sticking?

I got similar problems as you, sorry don't get your hopes up *** I don't know the fix either:mad: in addition, mine idles at 900 at cold starts and works its way up as the car gets warmer, WTF:confused: I adjusted idle countless times and timing is at 15. I checked TPS volts and the highest I can get it is .39  I already replaced the AIV assembly with my DE unit *** I thought it would help. And everytime i adjust the idle to 800, the RPM(when driven for a while) comes down too low to the point where the car cuts off at stop lights.
I just don't know what to do anymore.....

Thanks for the suggestions/ possible issues. I will definitely check into my cable sticking. The TPS is just a year old so I don't think it's that. The car really runs great. I have no real worries because it runs like new. It just idles high sometimes.

As I was thinking about it, it might be an ECU issue. besides a cable sticking the only thing that can alter idle that much so quickly back and forth is the ECU. If the car were running lean for a bit for example, the ECU might compensate for that by running up the idle. Does this make sense to anyone?

I actually had that before, it even went up to 2k on the car and just got it back recently like on sat. The way I got it to go away was to spray throttle body cleaner into the intake. It would always work and than come back but its been awhile. I had to spray it while the car was on cause of the 4 throttle bodies and I saw on the S-afc that the throttle percentage would fluctuate so that was my reasoning. That dirt or blowby was keeping it open ever so slightly to cause that.

What SucKit said...

Check the throttle body and clean that sucker out. My '97 Pathfinder behaved similarly, and a good cleaning out made it idle much better. The gunk just keeps the TB plate open ever-so-slightly at idle.

Also...check your intake piping/tube/whatever for ANY leaks. As in...any place outside air can get into the intake tract. That was the cause of high idling on my SE-R last year, and it took forever to find it. Turns out I had a small gap around the (then) single nitrous Fogger in the intake tract. Just enough to allow extra air into the intake tract.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a bunch. I'm going to work on it tomorrow
