: Burning oil??

Here is the deal. I got the DET running again.
Its a 98 9.5:1 bottom end,DET head,DET intake manifold, det t25 turbo, msd 50lb/hr injectors, cobra maf,S3 cams etc etc.. Anyhow the head gasket sealed well and everything looks clean(coolant,oil,exhaust..) Except* for sometimes when I drive the motor above 3k rpms and let it idle down (coming to a stop)it will fall to around 200-500 rpms then recover. When this happens I get a nice puff of blue smoke from the rear. This only happend about 30% of the time while I'm coming to a stop. The other 70% of the time it idles down fine and I see no smoke.

All the VC pluming looks good(catch can etc..) FWIW the oil feed is taped off the sendeing unit from the back of the motor. I used a 1/8" hard steel line in the same fashion the stock DET turbo had. Crush fittings on both ends and neither are leaking.

Any sugestions on why this is happening?

TIA

check your valve stem seals. if it is only happening on ocasion on deceleration i would more than likely say its the turbo. i know that is what mine did, and it was brand new, come ot find out it had a bad seal and they sent me a new one.

If you are not using a 0.060" oil restrictor in the oil feed line for the turbo, then the smoke is caused by blowing oil past the seals of the turbo. The oil is then being burned and manking blue smoke out of your tailpipe. You need to use a 0.060" or 1/16" restrictor to limit the flow of oil to the turbo.

Thanks I'll have to look into that. Dose it matter where the restrictor is located? Can I put it rite off the sending unit? Or dose it have to be rite before the turbo?

also, check to see if you are injesting oil through the crankcase ventilator.

if it is, Mike K told me to put a T right below the catch can, route the output on the Valve cover to the T, then connect the top of the catch can to the intake. this will still create vaccum for the ventilator, but allow the oil to expand in the catch can, making it much harder to injest.

I would place it right before the turbo. You can get a restrictor from Ben Rockwell. Just tell him what size lines or fittings you are using and he should be able to help you out.

I think I'm having the same problem. This started happening today, the car runs fine, then when I'm at idle for a few minutes the car starts smokingand looks a little on the blue side. So I guess then my seals are bad on the turbo???

HELP!!!

does anybody have Ben Rockwell's email cause I think I need a restrictor, also mine never had this problem before but now it does it all of a sudden, I took it to a turbo rebuilding place and they said that it is fine...I just had it rebuilt about 8 months earlier anyway, I have yet to do a compression test to see if its the piston rings but I doubt it...can anybody help me...Ill be there tomarrow at the meet in Cypress so you can all laugh and see whats up

I hope you don't have a filter on your catch can? If so that is the incorrect way. You catch can should be of the closed loop style without a vent to atmosphere.
