: trans fluid
12.30se-r92 02-16-2002, 04:27 AM im gona change out my trans fluid and i wanted to *** how many quarts does the trans take the dealership said 6 store said 61/2 and some mechanic shop told me 3 does anyone *** the correct amount it takes?ps what kind should i use
luminus 02-16-2002, 04:45 AM If its a manual transmission, it'll use just under 4 quarts. That was on my '91 Sentra SE-R. What ever fluid you use, make sure it ISN'T GL5. That stuff smells like crap and has stuff in it that will eat your syncros over time. You need the GL-4 stuff.
I'll tell you right now its a pain in the ass to find non-synthetic 75W-90 GL4 transmission fluid. I ended up using royal purple, and it seems to be quite nice. Others use redline MT-90 (or MTL)...
(oh, and you can find a lot more info in the main se-r archives at http://www.se-r-list.org/)

Loe Lyf 02-16-2002, 10:55 AM My '93 NX took 3 liters of Redline oil. I thought it was supposed to take 4, but it barely took 3.

If you already have a leak in one of your seals, don't put redline or royal purple it, it'll probably just leak worse.
Oh, and if you bought 'gear oil' at a typical automotive parts store, there is probably a 90%+ chance its GL-5.

Its GL-4.
My 94 tranny took 4 quarts.
seralex 02-17-2002, 08:06 PM its very easy to fill your trans get 4 quarts and you'll see when your full the fluid will start dripping out the fill hole meaning your done don't have to overfill, a big p.s i tried mt90 and it was very crapy when was hard shifting were other s had the same problem so i wasn't the only one
specalk 03-29-2006, 07:49 PM anyone have a writeup on how to change it and also is it ok to buy the stuff at the dealership, the nissan brand?
Sanyo 03-29-2006, 07:59 PM Changing the trans fluid is extremely easy. If your lookin up at your transmission from under it, engine on the right, trans on the left, the drain bolt will be on the left side of the transmission. You use a 1/2" ratchet to take it out *actually it's something stupid like 5/8, but 1/2" should work fine. Drain the fluid just like you would oil. Make sure the fluid is heated up, because that shit moves slow when it's cold. Once it's done draining, but the plug back in and tighten it up. The fell plug is on the front side of the trans facing the radiator. It's about halfway up, and you use a 3/8" ratchet to get it out. Get a funnel with a long tube, push the tube into the trans fill hole, and just pour away. Dump the first three in without hesitation. On the fourth, pour it a bit slower. When it's full, the fluid will start to come out the fill hole. That's when you stop pouring. It should take almost 4 full quarts though. Put the plug back in and your done. Easy as hell. Good luck man!

jerryeads 03-30-2006, 07:49 AM I suppose if there's something already screwed up in the gearbox Redline MT90 might not help, but I was nothing short of dumbfounded at how much better my 93 shifts with that stuff over regular goo. and myoilshop will have it to you in short order. Good folks.
MT90 is all I use and love it! I always buy 4qts. and use nearly all of it.
The semi-literate guy who said he had a problem with MT90... yeah, there is a little more "effort" to shift, but it is so much smoother.
jerryeads 03-30-2006, 09:24 AM SEMI-literate? My goodness you're being lenient today, Brian - :-)
